Global Roaming (IPass) software won't work on R50e

#1 Post by porty » Sat Nov 18, 2006 3:27 pm

I've been trying to get IPass to run on my R50e (XPH-SP2) without success. Here's the startup message:

"Unable to start the iPassConnectEngine"

My ISP had no answers, IBM suggested a new BIOS, which had no effect at all, and the IPass people themselves don't seem to have a clue.

We're heading from NZ to Australia tomorrow, but I might have to rely on Internet Cafes to stay in communication unless I can find a fix. I'm an IT tech, so I think I've done most of the obvious things.

Suggestions would be most welcome :--))

It starts three services: iPass Connect Engine; iPassPeriodicUpdateApp; and iPassPeriodicUpdateService. Are any, or all, of them running? The one that looks like it would be a problem to you is the Connect Engine. Is it there? Can you start it manually?

I have it running on a T41 (XPP SP2), and have successfully connected with it. Just now, it will check for software updates (3.5 build 153 appears to be current) but won't check the phonebook. My last phonebook update was Oct 2, 2006.

Thanks, JD - good call - didn't think to check Task Manager.

Nothing you mentioned has started, but there is an app called ipccheck.exe running.

I did a search for it on the machine and found a copy of the file in two places:
C\Progs\iPass\iPass connect and C\Progs\iPass\iPass connect\downloader.

Attempting to directly click the iPass startup file, which seems to be IPassConnectGui.exe, it just brings up the usual:

"Unable to start the iPassConnectEngine"

BTW, I'm running Ewido antispyware, NOD32 and Zone Alarm Pro, but disabling all of these doesn't improve the situation.

Any idea if iPass is dependent on a specific Windows Service to run?

For years I've been routinely disabling a number of Services on all my builds and service jobs. However, one other thing I've tried is to reset them all back to defaults, so I don't really think this is an issue.

Cheers.

I don't know if iPass is dependent on other services, but except for a tiny few, I do not disable services (I see no need).

I am on iPass dialup right now just to make sure all is working and it seems to be. I cannot get the phone book to update either on broadband or on iPass dialup, but that may be unrelated.

If those three services are not running, it appears not to have installed properly, but then I don't know why. I have had GRIC remote installed (the Dialer.net forerunner to iPass), then iPass 3.36, and now iPass 3.50. They all worked. The GoRemote software inbetween GRIC and iPass conflicted with Access Connections and I did not use it.

If you can find GRIC someware, it still works. And if all else fails, the whole thing is just a front end to the Windows dialer. If you can find the phone numbers you need and have an iPass userid and password, you can stuff those into the Windows dialer and they will work. In fact, iPass creates a dialer connectoid in the Network Connections folder.

Thanks again, JD. I'll try your suggestions.

Cheers
