Avatar images for users
Avatar images for users
I know it is going to eat some bandwidth and might be make this forum a little unprofessional, but it'd be nice to have options to have an image for oneself (like what Bill/Nonny have). The admins can restrict the size/content (nothing explicit or offending) of the images.
I agree there are zillion forums on the internet with this feature, but sometimes it looks nice to see the user images, most of which tell something about the user. Importantly, it is easier to visually "search" for a particular user's post - for example, I simply look for 5 feathers for Christopher's messages. I beleive that if chosen properly, these avatar images will be a great addition to the forum.
Just my $0.02.

eBay recently added an avatar and the My World page display prior to looking at a person's feedback. Waste of space and another click to get to what I really want. Not for me, thanks.

'Round these parts we get our avatars the old fashioned way.gator wrote:I know it is going to eat some bandwidth and might be make this forum a little unprofessional, but it'd be nice to have options to have an image for oneself (like what Bill/Nonny have). We earn them.

Avatars, oh... i am AGAINST it. Sorry.
Just have a look at some of the forums which allowed users to add in avatars. So messy and when i am surfing from my PDA, i am so [censored] off with the downloading time because it is so slow and it took at least 20 minutes to load 1 page.
Avatars... I still like the feathers and birds and maybe Mr Morrow could add in 1 more type of avatar (helpful award) and allow members with at least 100 posts to vote for helpful users and this move also encourage other members who wanted that type of avatar to work hard for it.

James, I know. I feel so dumb now even suggesting this idea. Someday, I'll earn a feather too.JHEM wrote: 'Round these parts we get our avatars the old fashioned way.

I have only two objections to Avatars;
1.) They suck up bandwidth for what would otherwise be a clean inline thread on a serious support forum.
2.) There is a high probability that somebody is going to pick and/or generate an avatar that constitutes an extreme aesthetic offense to the visual organs and suddenly think it looks "B4dAZZ." See, Yahoo!, Second Life, and animated gifs.

8 out of 9 members in this thread are against the avatar idea.
Yes, we have the luxuary to use broadband and wireless but always remember that some members are still using dial-up and it needs to take some time for a full page with avatars to load and this can stretch up to 20 minutes and per minute the dial up fee is SGD0.05 and it might be more expensive in some other countries.
Hope you understand our objections.

I like it the way it is now.
It looks cute at first but after looking at it for almost everyday, i find it boring.

Perhaps you had better read those Rulez in your sig paying particular attention to the part about no images without a warning in the subject line.NS wrote:For example this: img]http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/466/4784fn7.gif[/img]carbon_unit wrote:The animated gif avatars are the worst. *blush* Sincere apologies to nonny and fellow mates...
Can't you just turn off images on your PDA? (avatar or not, it's just downloadin time)NS wrote:Just have a look at some of the forums which allowed users to add in avatars. I don't like avatars either, and surely not these animated gifs (when reading a topic where a user with a disco-ava replies several times it is really annoying).
Wish there was an option in Profile menu to turn avatars off (maybe it exists, never looked for it).
