Vista RTM Running on my T42P

#1 Post by RMD » Mon Nov 20, 2006 11:37 am

I decided to make the leap last night and do a fresh install of Vista RTM on my T42P (2373-HTU).

I chose to do a format so I didn't have to spend any time cleaning up old files. I moved the files I wanted to save to an external HD via USB.

The install was quite painless. It took about 30 minutes, including the performance tests it did on the first boot.

I think it was missing a few drivers, but it was hard to tell because it contacted Windows Update moments after loading the desktop for the first time and installed the missing drivers. I saw a few notifications that drivers were installed, but nothing that told me exactly what was missing.

The performance rating of my machine is 3.8. The machine has a 1.8 Ghz Pentium M, 1GB of ram, 60GB HD, and the FireGL 128MB card. The machine feels very responsive... even more so than on XP. Folders and applications seem to *pop* into existence almost instantly. And little things like browsing network folders is MUCH faster.

The trackpoint and trackpad both worked, but I couldn't scroll using the scrolling button/trackbad combo, nor could I scroll using the right side of the trackpad.

I installed the beta drivers for UltraNav from Lenovo's site. Since they didn't have them (or anything else) listed for the T42P, I had to use the ones for the T43, but they seemed to work fine.

I then tried to run the HotKey Util setup (which I saved from my old install), but it had some issues. At first it wouldn't install because it couldn't detect what software I was running already. It just listed blank entries.

After cancelling out of the setup, Vista told me that it detected that the setup probably didn't work and that I should try again using some compatibility settings. This seem to work, and the hotkey utils installed fine. I could now use the volume keys, the brightness keys, the keyboard light, etc.

What still does not work is the screen blanking (Fn+F3), and the wireless on/off (Fn+F5). Hitting Fn+F3 does nothing, and Fn+F5 turns bluetooth on/off. If anybody knows how to fix this, I would appreciate the feedback.

I'll use this thread to keep people aprised of any problems/fixes I encounter over the next few days.

So far, so good!

Aero Glass works perfectly. The T42P has the 128MB FireGL card, which is DirectX9 compliant and for which there are WDDM drivers included on the Vista DVD.

It's very zippy, too.

Default Refresh - 50 hz?

#4 Post by techniware_au » Thu Nov 30, 2006 5:34 am

Hi,

My Vista RTM install on my T42p (2373-KTM) went smoothly. However, I have noticed the default refresh is 50hz, so every now and then I get flicker. (Especially when resuming from standby, but occasionally on first boot too).

"List All Modes" on the graphics driver properties shows resolutions from 1400x1050 to 640x480 at True, High an 256 colour.

Have you been able to get your FireGL T2 to run at a higher refresh rate?

The Hotkeys for turning on and off the WiFi require something proprietary to IBM/Lenovo in the WiFi driver that the Vista inbox drivers lack.

If you can load the XP drivers for your WiFi card that are available for download on the Lenovo website, the WiFi on/off hotkey will work.

You can turn off WiFi in the Mobility Center in Control Panel.

Generally speaking, most of the XP drivers still work on Vista.
WHen you are facing a feature that doesn't work, try and put the XP driver.
Two months ago, I installed Vista on a X60 Tablet, and got almost everything working (except Fingerprint Software) using the XP drivers and ThinkVantages.
T43 2668-92G (upgraded to 1GB RAM) (don't have it anymore)
X60 1709-H6U (upgraded to 2GB RAM)
T60 1951-A47

I have the same problem with my 2373-KTU. I thought it might be the 'Generic PNP Monitor' but changing it to 'Digital Flat Panel 1400x1050 60hz' didn't allow a refresh rate selection other than 50hz either. Hopefully a driver refresh will bring a fix.

I have tried some troubleshooting with RMD. RMD says the pc he is running has a 60hz refresh.

I have verified driver versions - they were identical
Verified ati bios versions - identical
noticed he was running an older bios that me - 3.16 vs 3.21
- I flashed to 3.16

but still I see only 50 hz.

However, if I clone to an external monitor, I am able to force a refresh to a higher setting.

So I'm still confused where the difference would lie.

Apologies for the shameless bump. I eventually dropped vista from my t42p entirely due to this problem. Has anybody found a way around it, or noticed it disappearing spontaneously? Perhaps using the omega drivers or something?

edit:
After some poking I found these two other threads on the same topic. None of them seem to have been resolved satisfactorily..
