Electromagnetic Field on T20

#1 Post by jschunkew » Tue Nov 21, 2006 4:10 pm

For those that may have an interest, the T20
is not grounded, and therefore emits a high
electric field. My USB mouse and keyboard also
have high magnetic and electric fields when
plugged into the T20 via a hub.

This problem can easilly be fixed by grounding
one of the serial port retainer nuts.

I know, electromagnetic hypersensitivity doesn't exist.
Just trying to help those few that may have it.

it appears to me, that through the metal casing, thinkpads should be quite shielded. faraday - cage and all. even the keyboard has a metal base so that even when its open not a whole lot can be emmitted.

I'm measuring 20 v/m electric field
and 25 mili gauss a few inches
above the keyboard. When
grounded, the electric field is
negligible, with no affect on the
magnetic. These are AC fields, not
static by the way.

Metal casing, you mean the
titanium composite shell? Isn't the
titanium used outside the LCD
screen only, the rest of the laptop
shell is plastic?

Anyway. I find the T20 much
more tolerable (electro sensitive
wise) than newer laptops. It's more than likely because of the
slower bus, but maybe also the
construction.
