If you want an X40 with nice specs, $600 can only give you a beat-up unit with no warranty, which might not last long and so you end up wasting money. I don't mean to brag but the $805 mint-condition X40 (1.2GHz/1.5GB/40GB/2yr IBM warranty left) that I sold yesterday is pretty much the best X40 that one can get.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

I would avoid buying a very cheap X40/X41 too unless you know there is no problem. The repair cost is too high.
currently own X61S, T42, X31, Macbook Pro Unibody i5

Yeah, an obvious example is the 1.8" HDD, which is three times the price of a 2.5" HDD. So it's much much better to have warranty coverage.
