Maximum running period for T42?

Hi.

I am planning to keep my T42 running during the night for downloading purposes. I've searched the past posts for an answer but couldn't find any. Is there a limit to the duration for running a T42 non-stop ? I mean, for how long can I leave it running before the CPU explodes?

Don't want to find it burnt one morning.

I have never seen any specification for ANY laptop which states that there is a maximum time limit that it can be left running. My daughters typically leave their T23 and 600X systems running all of the time. No standby mode or hibernation; they just like leaving them on. I have set their hard drives to go into "power down" mode after 3 minutes and the LCD backlights to turn off after 15 or 30 minutes.

From my perspective the only problem you might encounter is a hot disk drive since it will be constantly spinning as you are downloading. The CPU wouldn't be working that hard in that type of usage. As long as the fan and heatsink are doing their jobs, you shouldn't have to worry about it.

Haven't tried with my T42 but I have an X20 running 24/7 as home server. Last week power outage took it down (battery is long dead), but it had 100+ days uptime by then. Overnight sessions are perfectly normal, given that your machine can cool itself properly.

It should be fine, but if you do this every night, you may want to consider getting a cheap desktop computer dedicated to this task.

I agree but the only desktop consumes a LOT more electricity than a laptop increasing your electricity bill.

It is perfectly fine to leave it running all night, there is no restriction on that as long as it is cooled properly and provided with enough power.
At least one forum user has kept his 700 series online with an uptime of *4 years* and I have had nearly year-long uptimes with some of the older laptops I "retired."

My T42 & T43 runs from 0800H - 2200H everyday, 24x7x365.... so far no problem

Hi,

I've been running my T40 non stop since 2 years ago already... and my T42 is also running non-stop since 1.5 years ago. They both do grid computing when idle. Only problem so far has been with the T40 fan, which at one time developed some annoying noise, which I fixed with some oil in the bearings.

Only suggestion is keep it cool. Make sure it does not overheat with NHC or similar, and if necessary, undervolt it and / or rework the thermal interface on the processor so thet it runs cool.

Regarding hard drive, you can normally configure it to spin down when idle.

Depends really, Desktops only draw as much power as the parts demand, if you're using a Silent Desktop PC with your monitor and amplifier powered down then you probably wont be using much more than a run of the mill laptop.
