upgrade RAM on the T60

I am currently running on 2 x512M and going to to 1x1G + 1x512M
.
Is there a preferred bank for the 1G ?

Nope, doesn't matter. Be aware that you'll no longer be running in dual-channel mode, since you'll have mismatching SODIMM sizes. You probably won't notice the difference.
