Is there a brand of DVD-R that will actually write at 8X???

I recently bought a UJ-830S DVD burner for my R51. The burner works BUT the drive is supposedly capable of burning dvd's at 8X. I've yet to find a brand of blank dvd that'll write at 8x speed. The best I've gotten is 2X and I've yet to test any of the higher end media since I still have tons of the cheaper stuff

Can anyone either recommend a brand-name/type of dvd-r that will actually write at 8X on the UJ-830S or recommend a different dvd-rw for my R51?

Have you tried any Taiyo Yuden media? I've had good luck here: http://www.supermediastore.com/

Verbatims are a good second choice if you are buying locally. I look for Made in Japan on the DVD spindle label as it usually a sign og good quality.

Carbon_Unit I have tried "TYG02” or “TYG03" made by Taiyo Yuden from the superstore with no luck:(

Carbon_Unit could you tell me the model of the DVD Multi-Burner in your 2378-FVU? I'm seriously considering a different burner.

FredGarvin after searching google about the only useful website I found was http://www.kompatible-rohlinge.de/index ... id=341tain detailing a couple types of Verbatim's RW's that burn well with the UJ-830S but no info on their -R's:(

I guess since not many people have posted results on specific brand name DVD-R Media that works best with the UJ-830S I'm very weary about wasting more money on media to just be met with more disappointment from this drive.

If you guys could recommend a different DVD Multi-Burner drive that will fit the R51 it would be greatly appreciated.

I'd rather spend the money on a dependable drive than becoming a media tester for the UJ-830S.

Mine is a UJ-822B and it works great with the TYG02's.

WHAT BURNER MODEL WORKS AT 8X ON THE R50 SERIES??

Chime in Please if you have gotten 6x or 8x burning speeds on your Thinkpad R, A, or G series.

I paid good money for mine and it doesn't burn faster than 2x DVD-R

I'm especially interested in any success with the R51. I need the 8x, lifes to short.

But maybe its a hardware issue with the R50 series and nobody has ever actually gotten 8x.

Have you checked for a firmware update for the UJ-830S? What burning software are you using? That might make a difference too.

On a desktop computer, I regularly get 16x burn rates using TDK single-layer DVD-R media, and Nero. Part of it has to do with the computer's ability to keep the read buffer full. If the data you're writing is large numbers of small files (jpg, mp3, etc), then it really stresses the throughput of the hard drive feeding the burner. If you're writing DVD movies from VOB files, or ISO files, it should not be that hard to get better than 2x.

Hey, I appreciate your suggestion. I have the matshua. or whatever its called but so far I haven't established that any of these r51s, pretty old now, have actually burnt a dvd at 8x.

I also get 16x no problem on my desktop.

My drive is brand new and a hardware update shouldn't increase such a fundamental feature.

Nero gives 8x as an option for the dvd until you actually put a dvd in and then it drops to 2x.

Whats crazy is the usb port will burn DVDs at 6x to a usb dvd burner.. I don't understand how the ide ROM port could be slower than usb.

Again I want confirmation that somebody has burnt that fast then I'll start trouble shooting, otherwise whats the use.

This problem could be one of three things if you are using quality media that is rated to the speed stated on the tin, which you are.

The firmware is not recognising the maximum speed of the media, the drive is faulty, the manufacturer has overstated the capability of the drive.

I’ve been through the gamut of modifying the firmware for LiteOn DVDRW drives on a desktop only to have the drive die two months out of warranty, it wasn’t worth the effort.

I don’t think a change of media will help in this case. A firmware update may do, if one is available. Otherwise a different drive may be the best bet.

Sorry to rain on your fireworks, but many DVDRW drives have claimed to be much better specified than they actually were in reality. I know, I’ve been there several times before.

Just my opinion, not sacrosanct.

TDK works for me, I've been using it for years and they are my first and only choice, try to update firmware or enable DMA. Look at this post:

The problem with the answers on this thread is that nobody is saying their R51 burns at 8x.

The goal would be to identify the laptop dvd burner that worked for the R51. 'Mine works' or 'TDK' works doesn't do any good unless you identify the burner, computer, and successful write speed.

'You should tweek this or that' is great but useless if you just want to find out what hardware is doing the job out of the box for the actual computer that you own.

It does help to identify lame burners that don't burn fast on the R51 and I would add the UJ-830B to the bad list. Looks like it was made by panasonic too. Matsuashita also seems to be associated with this model. Whatever it is it sucks.

Has anybody burned a dvd at 8x on a laptop using an 855 intel chipset?

Maybe that will help identify worthy laptop dvd burners.

I just updated my DVD burner from 1.02 to 1.04 with absolutely no effect on the burning speed of the DVD-R media.

I have used three different brands of DVD-R and am running Nero 6.0.

So Firmware updates are useless as expected. Hope I'm saving somebody time.

If it makes any difference, I have an A31 with a UJ-830S and I have never had it write beyond 2x either. I have tried various mfr's DVDs.
