Problem: Need drivers for Unknown and Base System Device

#1 Post by kino » Thu Nov 23, 2006 12:57 am

I recently did a fresh install of Windows XP on my thinkpad z60m 2529-l2u and after installing all the drivers that I got from Lenovo's Website, I still have 2 devices in my device manager with question marks next to them. One says Base System Device and the other says Unknown. I can tell you that I have gotten my Audio, Video, Ethernet, Wireless, and Modem working, and maybe some other things too that I am unaware of. Can anyone think of something else I can do to figure out what these devices are and install the proper drivers for them?

How did you get the XP install to work with the SATA hard drive? I'm getting hung up on that with the one I'm working on. If I slipstream the drivers it installs fine but blue screens and if I manually add thjem I get an error with the iaStor.sys file in the drivers.

Edit: Nevermind, I just figured out what compatibility mode means. Durr... when I get done setting this one up if I figure out what that is I will post back and let you know.

Uhh...Dude, I didn't understand a word of what you just said. All i know is that I used a windows cd to reformat the hdd and then downloaded the drivers from http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-61506.

I ran the install then went into the drivers folder and did the setup apps to get the drivers to register with the device manager. And now I have two devices that still have questionmarks by them.

Did you use Lenovo's Software Installer? It usually can find all the right drivers for you, automatically.

I didn't respond earlier because I figured someone with a more complete answer would've posted by now.

kino, I did the exact same thing as you, and had those same 2 things still in my device manager.

It is just that I don't quite recall which drivers were still missing. I believe I actually clicked or right-clicked on the "unknown" device and the "base system device" and got more info, and then I searched google based on that info that was reported.
I think the "base system device" was for the 3 in 1 card reader, and the other "unknown" one was something to do with the Power Manager driver. Even though the Power Manager was installed from the device drivers page, I still had to do something else - I don't recall what I had to do, but it might have been as simple as clicking on the "unknown device" and choosing the option to let windows search for a driver to use (and it found the IBM PM driver), or I might have had to point it to the location manually.
Whatever it was I did was rather easy though, that's why I don't remember exactly what it was.

Its called Thinkvantage System update or some such, you download it off lenovo's website. I did it with the Z61m Im playing with here and it installed all the drivers for me. Took 2 reboots but did it.

Did you install the Intel Chipset drivers and the Windows XP Update Modules?

I downloaded and installed both the chipset and module things and then went into the drivers folder and did the setup apps for each. I still have the same unknown device. *cries in a corner* Make it work...

That device ( 82801DBM LPC Interface Controller) uses the Intel Chipset drivers on my T42. You might try uninstalling it in Device Manager, then reboot and see if it installs properly. Try this at your own risk. You might want to set a system restore point first.

Well, as to the effet of the modules/chipset whatchamacallits, after installing them, my video card started going into "infinite loops" according to the blue screen of death that kept popping up while i played Everquest2. I did a system restore point and i think its fine now. This "unknown device" seems to be more trouble than its worth. My computer runs fine without it as far as I can tell.

I am not a ThinkPad owner as yet, but am considering purchasing one soon. I have purchased Sony in the past (sorry to say because I am a retired IBM employee).

Maybe the following will help (someone) in determining where your problem lies. I can’t be of much help but to offer what I found by Googleing the device id you mentioned in your post. The following are not my comments but what I found on another forum. Apparently the poster solved his problem with this error.

Quote: “ACPI\ATM1100|4&3863886D&0
I managed to install a clean copy of XP TPE on my new X41 to get rid of all the IBM gunk. I've gotten most of the non-gunk drivers in, and have three remaining problems.

First, I do not have the ability to Suspend or Hibernate within Windows. I think this is because there is one remaining device without a driver, and it is an ACPI device, which has to do with power management. The device ID is ACPI\ATM1100\4&3863886D&0, can someone check their list in Device Manger and see what that is?
Update: Solved! This was the Trusted Platform Module device.”

I just discovered that my volume control buttons aren't working. Yay me! I would have just uninstalled all IBM preload stuff as recommended in the new thread http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=28650. but I also needed hdd space and uninstalling was helping that. *sigh* I wish I would have known about this forum before going and reformating my computer. Maybe I would have known about that hidden partition with all the software i could ever need for this comp.
