Because no one in politics believes in small government anymore. The Dems are high taxes and want to give (more?) rights to illegal immigrants, and the Republicans want us to give up essential freedoms in the name of "safety."

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
- Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759.

Edit: I'd like to add that we have turned into an uber-sensitive culture, where no one can be offended by anyone, and the government insists on putting everyone in a bubble.
We have also become a sue-everyone culture. If someone slips and falls on your property, expect a lawsuit. If you say something that someone might, just might, be offended by, expect a lawsuit. If a burgular breaking into your house in the middle of the night manages to hurt himself, expect a lawsuit (true story).

My two cents when it comes to people "being offended:" TOO *$#@#$@ BAD, DEAL WITH IT!

An excellent writer who writes about politics, economics, history, and government in terms that a real human being can understand: Richard J. Maybury. In my opinion, half of the people who are involved in politics don't really understand how it works...

His best and most interesting (for me) books are probably Whatever Happened to Penny Candy? (about economics) and Whatever Happened to Justice? and Are You Liberal, Conservative, or Confused? (about politics and government). If you're interested, start with Penny Candy (any good-sized bookstore will have it -- try the home-schooling textbook section).
