I took apart my 600X 2645-3EU and scooped up the 450 cpu that was in it and swapped it out for a 650 speedstep model I had aquired in a trade. When I booted up I entered the bios and the chip was recognized correctly, so I restarted but Windows froze on the splash screen every time I tried.
Do I have to do anything to "prepare" Windows to accept this cpu?
-Is there a different motherboard that actually supports speedstep, and some that do not?
-Is there a workaround to allow me to use this chip?
-Thanks

Yes, only some 600X support speedstep processors, in your case the 650mhz processor should run at 500mhz because you haven't done the speedstep mod on the new processor. ( I assume )
Question, you have pc100 or pc133rams installed right?

Yes. I have 2 sticks of 128mb pc100 installed (different brands)

I dont know what this means, so no I have not done anything. Not sure what, if anything the previous owner has done.

Thanks for pointing me to the Katch website, I have been there before a few times but forgot about it. After reviewing the mods there, I have determined that this cpu has not been altered. So my original problem still remains.
I suppose I will try starting the machine with no ram just to eliminate that as a problem. Also would it help if after I install the chip to enter the easy setup and hit the initialize button?
What makes me mad is that the machine correctly identifies the cpu in bios and starts to load windows XP and at some point during the XP splash screen it has a problem and freezes.
SO CLOSE!

Maybe that helps, I almost forgot to ask, do you have the latest bios installed?

Try a fresh install with another drive and see if it makes any difference.

Yes I have the latest/greatest bios. The fresh install is what I am thinking as well, just been putting it off because I just got my new Toshiba 100gb hard drive 3 days ago and just got everything loaded and configured the way I like
I am starting to wonder how much work an extra 150mhz is worth to me.
O well

That 150mhz will make a difference believe me.
Example i notice a difference in performance working on databases when my 770Z is running at 850mhz and when it is running at only 700mhz.

Tonepaq have you gotten your upgrade working? I'm having the same issues as you. When I go to config it detects a Speedstep 650MHZ CPU. My system is setup for dual boot linux and Windows XP. After P.O.S.T. I only have a blinking cursor. If I hit the FN F2 key I can get the Lilo boot menu. I select Windows XP and it starts to load then hangs. Bumping the power switch repeatedly causes Windows XP to load, but eventually it shuts down. Linux from Lilo loads and acts normally. The processor info shows I'm running at 647MHZ in Linux. Most of the upgrade info I've seen deals with 600E upgrades. I have the latest bios, used the fan from a 650MHZ 600x, RAM isn't an issue, checked the sticky 600 upgrade page. Oh, my 600X is 2645-4EU. If I didn't have to hit FN F2 to boot, I'd just run Linux and be happy. I was hoping for a BIOS solution.

Hi,
Try to toggle the Fn+F2 (or Fn+F11 alt. F12 which is faster), to run around the speedstep bug. It took me around 40-50 keystrokes!
And then in windows change the proc. driver to "intel processor" do not use the default Intel pIII.
