56w vs 72w adapter

#1 Post by mpcook » Fri Nov 24, 2006 6:27 pm

I have numerous adapters I have collected over the years. I may have 600 series, definitely have T2x series, and X3x series adapters laying around. They seem to be of the 56w or 72w varieties. Do I need to worry about which adapter I use with which TP? And also with the DockII?

Thanks!

Check the bottom of each laptop. Somewhere on one of the labels should be the amperage requirement. 3.36A is 54W and 4.5A is 72W (Amps x voltage = watts). If you use an adapter that is rated lower than what the laptop is rated, there is a small chance that you will run into problems. Those problems can be a hot adapter or an undervoltage condition. You CAN use an adapter that is rated higher than what the laptop is marked as without any problems.

Thanks for the advice. The X series have 3.36 amps, so I can use the 56w adapter. The T23 has 4.5 amps on the bottom, so I guess I should not use the 56w adapter with it.

ok, but now i'm confused.

on lenovo's site the 72w is also listed as an option for x40, which by default has a 56w!

so, what's the consensus now?!

The 72W adapter might be an option for the X40, if you are going with a larger cell battery. As Ray stated, there is nothing wrong with using the larger capacity AC Adapter.

An 8-cell battery would take longer to charge with the 56W adapter. That's why Lenovo recommends the 72W. My guess is that IBM/Lenovo has moved to 72W because it's backwards compatible with most models.

Sorry, I didn't see your reply until today.

If you aren't sure which adapter to use, then stick with the 72W adapter. Even the older 600 series can use the 72W adapter as an option.
