reinstalling key on the keyboard

#1 Post by akhavan » Sat Nov 25, 2006 2:14 am

Hi,

I was cleaning my keyboard and accidentally one of the keys came off . Can somebody tell me how I can reinstall it. I checked the IBM hardware maintenance but it only shows how to change the whole keyboard.

Thanks
Sepehr

If your T4x keyboard has the same type of construction as a 600X like this:

then you should be able to press the keycap straight down on the two plastic "arms" and it will snap back on.

I have the two arms attached to the arrow key . they open like a tent. I have tried to press it but even though it clicks it doesn't hold.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong.

Did you break anything? Which key is that? Space?

No I haven't broken anything. Its the right arrow key at the bottom right hand side of the keyboard. I have managed to put it back but it doesn't look too secure to me. Can I replace/order the key or do I have to change the whole keyboard?

OK I think something must be broken because after couple times pushing it for checking the bottom part of it came up in an angle and few second later it came off completely. Can I order just the key or do I have to order the whole keyboard? My warranty finished few days ago.

No, the key attachment is different on the 600 series and T4x series. However, if the above-reference post can be used to re-attach a keycap, that's great. I popped one of mine off and broke one of the little legs. IBM couldn't replace the individual keycap and sent me a whole new keyboard under warranty.

I'd call them up and tell them that the key fell of during the warranty and you popped it back on but that it continues to fall off.

I don't think you can actually replace a single key. In my experiences, I don't think its possible to actually "snap" a key or any of its components. Chances are, you have just separated the white and black sections of the "tent". With some dexterity, you can put the two pieces together and attach it to the keyboard (it does take some patience).

It's hard to explain how to do that but just pry open a nearby key to see how it works. Hope that helps... if it doesn't, just replace the whole keyboard.

Thanks to everyone. I showed it to IBM reseller service technician and he said he has to order a new keyboard. Re warranty he told me even if my warranty wasn't over this would not be covered by IBM.
