Z60M Problems

#1 Post by markforrester » Sat Nov 25, 2006 6:02 pm

I have had my thinkpad for over 6 weeks now and for 3 weeks it ran fine. As soon as i got it i fitted an extra 512mb of ram to bring it up to 1 gig.

One day, 3 weeks or so ago whilst it was going into hibernation the laptop crashed to the BSOD (blue screen of death).

After that it refused to load windows or let me use the thinkvantage recovery partition. I ended up putting a fresh XP installation on. Ever since then i have been getting random BSOD causing the whole operating system to become corrupt. I have installed XP at least 5 times in the past 3 weeks with no luck

I was just about to consider sending it back when i thought it would be worth trying taking the RAM out. I started by removing my new 512mb Transcend ram. With this out the system continued crashing and failing to boot windows.

I then removed the 512mb of Ram that came with the thinkpad when i brought it and replaced it with my transcend ram.

Ever since i done this the machine has run perfectly with no crashing and boots up everytime.

Has anyone else ever heard of faulty RAM from the factory or it causing random BSOD error messages and operating system failures?

I noticed that the OEM 512mb or ram says that it is lead solder free and ive researched that this can cause problems as the lead free solder is a relativily new technique which hasnt been mastered 100%

any feedback would be greatful as for the moment im going to hold fire on sending the laptop back unless i get some other problems.

many thanks

You could test it by burning a CD with an ISO from here:
