R40 Hard Drive Upgrade Questions

#1 Post by sscalf » Sat Nov 25, 2006 9:26 pm

Hi there,

I am new here and have a question that I hope has not been addressed somewhere else. I have found all sorts of information about the predesk area and hard drive limitations. What I have not found is an exact process for upgrading the hard drive in one of these beasts. I love my R40, I am totally impressed by the battery life but I cannot stand the 20GB hard drive that it came with. What do I need to know. I do not have a recovery disk, but I do have the COA on the bottom of the machine. I don't want to spend $100 on a new drive and not be able to use it. I have a Ultrabay Hard Drive adapter on the way. What do I need to know. Also If I just format the drive in the adapter and install windows is the Predesk area even necessary. My concern is that it is necessary for the unit to boot. Can some one please help!!!

The simplest approach is to use Ghost (or a similar application) to clone your existing hard disk. It'll save you reinstalling Windows and your applications.

P.S. A nice 60 GB 7200 rpm disk for sale here, and at a nice price:

One free alternative for a one-time migration to a new disk is to download the Acronis TrueImage Workstation trial version:
