No driver Updates

#1 Post by Imran » Thu Sep 02, 2004 10:31 am

Hi

Im bit of newbie to thinkpads.

I will have a university wireless conection next year.
I will not have access to a wired connection for at least a year.

Ive just bought a new t42.

will the fact I wont be able to update my drivers from the time i bought it for a year be a problem for me?

Also ive bought a hp printer which i wont be able to driver update for a year.

I heard it is defintely not a good idea to update drivers wirelessly??

Thanks

Imran

What you can do (and what I do) is download the driver (wirelessly or wired) and then install it after downloading. That way you are not dependent on connection. I even upgraded my wireless NIC driver that way, and then Access Connections, and then when it was complete I had a wireless connection again. There is no reason to go a year without updating. ... As some might say YMMV. I have never had a problem downloading drivers with my wireless :D . Besides you are usually or at least can be off-line to install :?

Confuscius say "If it aint broke, don't fix it".

Most people actually don't have problems with original BIOS/firmware/drivers - My youngest daugter has an original issue T40 with the original software image and is having no problems over a year later (and her original printer driver works fine too). If you have specific problems that a driver update is known to fix, then go ahead but otherwise firmware/software upgrades can introduce as many problems as they cure.

Imran - the same applies to firmware. I have a diskette drive for my T41. I recommend diskette drives and use them for BIOS, Embedded Controller and firmware updates. You are offline at that point, so wireless / wired has nothing to do with it. ... JDHurst
