Is it really necessary to update the factory software?

#1 Post by Skysurfer » Sun Nov 26, 2006 12:46 pm

I just completed reformatting the hard drive on my T43 to restore the machine to "factory settings" and I would like to know what your opinion is on whether I really really need to do ANY upgrades to the software.

If the machine works perfectly right now, is it really necessary to update ANY of the software (except anti-virus)? I purchased the T43 back in August 2005, and it has all those vintage pieces of software on it. From Windows XP to everything IBM/Lenovo had at the time. I do use wifi and the ethernet port to access the Internet via my office and home networks.

Thanks!

Lawrence

It's not absolutely necessary to update it. I have seen plenty of thinkpads sitting on customers desks that have never seen the update web site.

I always install all Windows updates, many of which are security patches. I never feel comfortable accessing the internet without first installing all the updates.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

Also, if you only have Windows Media Player 9, I would update it to version 10, which can rip CDs into MP3 files.
