Usb 2 slots recognized as usb 1 slots on T40 - help!

#1 Post by kayzer » Sun Nov 26, 2006 3:08 pm

For some strange reason a popup notifies my that "my external harddrive would run faster in a 2.0 usb slot "(directly translated from danish) when i plug it or other usbdevices to my computer.
All transfers via usb are very slow. I don't know how to fix this annoyning problem, without recovering the whole system. Please help.
Full details om the computer is T40 2374-EG5

Does Windows' Device Manager recognize the ports as 2.0? Both USB connectors behave the same? You are not using an external hub, are you?

And has it always been this way?

Wow that was a quick reply :)

Both USB connectors behave the same :?

I bought the laptop secondhand so I wouldn't know if it was always like this. I've had it for 2 years or so, and it's always had the same problem- only recently it started til bother me as I'm doing a lot of backup which takes ages

not quite sure what you mean by external hub. Didn't buy any extra hardware appart from memorysticks, harddisks, mp3 players and so on.

Sadly my windows is in danish and I'm not quite sure if i the device manager is what i think it is. I took a screenshot of what i believe to be the it the "enhedshåndtering" in that way I wont give you any wrong information. The "enhedshåndtering does recognice my slots as usb 2.0... have a look at the screenshot: http://www.rasmuskk.dk/usb.jpg

My Danish skills aren't so hot either! It does indicate that the USB ports are 2.0 -- but what's the error that it is showing in the USB section?

kayser,

99% of the time it is the motherboard you can try a fresh install of xp sp2 and if still doesn't work you will need to get a nwe motherboard installed.

Best place to find it is ebay. :)

Yep, USB slowdown on the T40 to USB 1.1 speed is a known issue: something about the southbridge shorting due to static electricity. Easiest solution is to get a PCMCIA USB/Firewire card.

When i gave IBM support dk this info they stopped guiding me to install all kinds of different software. Instead they're sending a technician change the motherboard tomorrow. I have onsite support untill march :D

kayzer,

You didn't mention it's still covered under warranty, i am glad you can have it replaced without paying for it. :)

Didn't think it would be a warranty issue as i thought it was only a matter of finding the right software

The technician came by today and changed the motherboard - free of charge :D :D - and now it's working just fine.
I'll probably recover the system anyway just to make sure everything is installed properly

i am getting so [censored] frustrated with my t41. i am on my 3rd motherboard in the 2 1/2 - 3 months i've owned this thing, and the usb ports have reverted to 1.1 speeds yet again!!!

what the heck could be causing this? i have a slight squeak from the palmrest while i am typing cuz the casing has been taken apart so often.

any ideas? i really like the thinkpad features/size/thinklight etc, but am getting ready to say forget this, and go back to dell latitudes, never had any issues with any of those i've ever owned.

It is my belief that this problem is caused by using USB devices that draw too much power from the port. If possible use external power with your USB device. For example, this could be a USB external hard drive or other device that requires a fair amount of power to run. A basic USB mouse should not cause any problem.

i barely use my usb ports, and when i do, the only thing i use them for is my flash drive. i use my pc for my ipod connection, so literally, the only thing i have ever plugged into the usb ports on my t41 is my 2gb corsair flash drive, so i don't think that could be the problem in my case....

Six repairs to my Latitude C400 in the three years I had it -- as much as all my other notebooks in the last 10 years added together. Never again for me.

i must be lucky then, i've owned around 10 different dell's, pc's and latitude laptops, and never one time had a hardware problem, and that doesn't even include the dell's i've used at places i've worked that haven't had hardware issues either. thats why i'm kinda bummed about this, cuz i really like the thinkpad...

You didn't even get the Dell Floppy Screen Syndrome, where the display hinges start having more and more play due to either poor design or cheap hinge materials? Every Latitude in our office (and we have lots) over six months old suffers from this, regardless of model. People who don't keep calling Dell for replacement screens under warranty eventually have the hinges come apart completely ...

nope, and that includes my ancient latitude CPi... hinges still in as good as shape as my t41, and the thing is so old its got a 300 mghz p2!

anyway, any ideas on cause or fix for the usb condition? its really a pain in the [censored], and i don't want to keep replacing the mb, even though it is in warranty until 4/07..... the way i look at it, a quality part should be having this many problems....
