RECOVERY CD's PROTECTED AREA HOW TO MAKE IT

I made it on my G40 when i bought a new 80GB HD.
I spent All Night ,but i Made it.
You jast get your Hidden Protected Area (HPA) from you old HD and put it on your new. And Everething work fine EVERITHING!!!


Firs of all read this:

It is to mach technical languge but to Understanding how it works it is ok.

And now lets Get to bissenes:

You will need

1. MS-DOS diskette
2. Win98 Startup diskette.
3. Win XP installation CD Doesn't metter It can be pirate copy you will use it only for a copple of minutes.
4.CD-RW drive (Internal/External)doesen't metter
5.And 5 Blank CD-R.


OK.........

Ready?


1) On disk(HD) from which you want to make a backup of HPA
Disk C: you mast kill the NTFS Partition and reformat it with FAT32.

2) Shutdown the computer.

3) Connect you USB FDD (or on G40 We have internal floppy).

4) Start your Computer And when he ask you to interrupt normal startup press IBM Access button.Press it.

5) Now you in IBM Utillites Area. Run the (Recover to factory settings) utillity.

!!!!!DO NOT START THE RECOVERY PROCESS JAST START THE UTILLITY!!!!!!!

And pres F3 button, you get the command prompt line A:

6) Type A:\RECOVERY press enter

Attention! A: is not Yor Floppy (as you may think)
A: It Is An HPA On your HD,and your floppy will be Disk B:
Wierd right?

7) Insert MS-DOS diskette in your floppy drive B:

8) In command line type:

A:\RECOVERY\COPY FWRECOVER.EXE B:
press ENTER

9) In command line type:

A:\RECOVERY\COPY FWBACKUP.EXE B:
press ENTER.

In other words you jast copied two files(FWRECOVER.EXE and FWBACKUP.EXE )From IBM Hidden protected Area Partition A:
to your MS-DOS Floppy diskette B:

10)Shutdown the Computer.

11)Start up the computer and enter BIOS.
In BIOS enter security area and set it to DISABLE. Save BIOS settings ,and restart from MS-DOS Diskette.

12)When you in DOS type:
FWBACKUP size=640 file=c:\imgset

press ENTER.

Now The process which will create five files (640 Mb each one) named IMGSET.001 - IMGSET.005 on you disk C: is started.
Sit back and wait ,it will take a long time.
After the process is fineshed shutdown you TP.

13)Install Windows XP from Win XP CD.On partition C:


!!!!!!!!!!!!DO NOT REFORMAT THE PARTITION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!YOU MAST KEEP FIVE FILES THAT YOU CREATED!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!JAST INSTALL WINDOWS AS IS UNDER ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!DOESNT METTER HOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!


14)After you have finished Windows instalation you will see this five files (named IMGSET.001 - IMGSET.005 ) on you partition C:


15)Install any burning program as Nero or what do you use...


16)Install you burner and jast burn this five files(named IMGSET.001 - IMGSET.005 ).each one on separate CD.

17)Shutdown the computer.


CONGRATULATIONS YOU HAVE YOU RECOVERY CD'S WITHOUT PAY MONEY TO IBM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!


18) Install You New HD To you ThinkPad.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HD MUST HAVE NO PARTITIONS AND ANY FORMAT(BLANK HD)!!!!!!!!!!!

19)Start computer from WIN98 Sturtup diskette with CD-ROM support.

20)Insert the disk that you labaled IMGSET.001 into CD-ROM

21)Take out you WIN98 Sturtup diskette from floppy drive
and insert into floppy.MS-DOS diskette with two files (FWRECOVER.EXE ,FWBACKUP.EXE )
in command line type:

FWRESTOR file=C:\IMGSET.

press ENTER and follow the instructions it will take time about an hour

After you restored all five CD's,shut down the computer.

22)Start up the computer and enter BIOS.
In BIOS enter security area and set it to PROTECTED OR NORMAL

!!!!!!!!!!!!!WARNING DO NOT START WINDOWS UNTILL YOU SET IT TO PROTECTED OR NORMAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!OTHERWISE YOU WILL MAST TO DO THE FWRESTOR FROM THE BEGINING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

23)Start your Computer And when he ask you to interrupt normal startup press IBM Access button.Press it.
In IBM Utillites Area. Run the (Recover to factory settings) utillity,but now make the recowery process.


OK EVERYTHING ITS DONE.

P.S. IF you want to keep HPA on yor old HD,install it to you computer and run this process from step 18. thats ALL. but before you begine delete all partitions from HD !!!!!!!!!
IT MUST BE BLANK HD!!!!!!!!!!!.

I don't think that my A30 has this feature. IBM seems to suggest that this "burn a CD from the Recovery Partition" is only contained on newer machines.
