What's the difference between Hitachi E7K100 and 7K100?

What it says in the title.

Because I have been looking at them, they cost the same and I can't see any difference in the specs.

So which one should I get?

Using the Search link at the top of this page (search for E7K100 in all conferences), this is one of the links that you would find:

Basically, the E7K100 is a server blade version of the 7K100; the difference, and this is important for most users, is that the E7K100 firmware has little to no powersaving or acoustic throttling ability as it was meant to run 24/7 in blade servers. That thread that Ray posted a link through should give you a good idea of what can happen if you use it in a laptop. :)

Do not buy the E7K100:!: I have a 60Gig E7K100 and it vibrates a lot, temp maxing 40-42C. Did the investment and get a 100Gig 7K100. I could tell you the difference. Operating temp on the 7K100 is 30-32C, there's practically no vibration compared to the monster E7K100. The sound is almost the same, though the 7K100 is quieter. Performance is the same, but the E7K100 gets too hot inside the tiny spacing on a T4x laptop.

wow I have never heard of laptop hard drives to make laptop as server. So this HDD can run 24/7 if I have my laptop on, without getting bad sectors or hdd damage like regular hard drive?

will this drive function do same for any other laptop as well?

Either the 7K100 or E7K100 can. My 7K100 runs almost 24/7.

But 2.5" drives do indeed get used for high-density rackmounted servers. In those cases the RAID controller is generally responsible for managing bad sectors etc, and the drive electronics just get out of the way. :)
