HELLO ALL,

For some reason my matshita dvd-rom(sr-8175) is not being recognized (power is getting to it) upon startup on my T22 with windows unless i hit (fn+f4) from xp which goes to standby. I then startup again and get to my xp login screen and I hear xp detecting it with a (ding-ding) sound. Now it seems xp detects it partially with the normal popup on the bottom right corner which displays the drive recognition but the drive icon is not under "My Computer". I went to system devices and it is being recognized under "cdrom drives", tried the updated driver thing, already updated.

**The weird thing is the BIOS also is not recognizing it upon startup** and I cannot boot from CD to install a new linux distro.

Why isn't the bios recognizing the dvd-rom and xp partially recognizing it? o and mandrake also does not recognize it when I try to mount. I am going nuts here! anyone??? could my hardrive be faulty, thats the only thing i can think of???

This is not an answer to your question but I wanted to say that on my T22 when I am going off of standby, sometimes my mouse is not recognized and I have to unplug it (PS2) and re-plug it and then it is recognized. Not all the time, but probably at least once a week and I use standby if I'm away from the laptop for more than an hour. Just curious, do you use a docking station?

hey, i've been to pittsburgh before - very nice there, very. i'm currently applying to penn law, could you recommend it? :)

as to your issue: at first glance, this seems to hardware related. best thing for diagnosis is probably trying a different drive first. maybe you have someone with such a drive in your vicinity... (wink, wink)

ya its not too bad, i'm actually a little south of pittsburgh but not too far away. as for penn law, not sure about that but it's probably a decent school if i had to guess.

thanks for your answer but i tried the floppy drive in the ultrabay, same thing. do mean a hard drive? thanks for your help.

i meant a dvd drive, but if you have the same issue with a floppy as well, then probably not the dvd is at fault, but the machine. i have no experience with t22's, but if its like with the t30, then the ultrabay is actually just a mechanical extension of a connector that's directly on the mainboard. as a result, if your issue is caused by a hardware defect, you would most likely have to replace the mainboard.

before taking such a step, i would definately try all possible software solutions such as: update the bios and embedded controller. operating system reinstall probably won't fix anything, since as you described the problem occurs at POST (BIOS test) even when no OS is loaded.

i'd go with the update. :) good luck

The BIOS update is worth a try as an earlier version had a problem with drive letters and supervisor password. Weird I know.

bios update did not work, i tried the 1.12 update but my battery indicator keeped on blinking red for some reason so I went back to 1.11 but still nothing, same problem. anyone else have any good advise?
