possible overheading problem?

#1 Post by altair » Mon Nov 27, 2006 8:56 pm

I recently upgraded the motherboard in my T40 to that of a T41p after my T40's motherboard started developing problems that I posted about earlier.

After installing the motherboard the system spontaneously shut down twice withing 5 minutes of the initial power up. Once while at the BIOS splash screen (a few minutes after power on after going into the bios and setting the clock & stuff) and once while booting the OS (linux) for the first time with the new motherboard.

I finnally got the OS fully booted now and it seems stable although I underclocked the CPU and video chip since I don't yet have the larger fan assembly that was in the real T41p.

Could these spontaneous poweroffs be the result of overheating, or is this new (used) motherboard probably defective? I never saw my T40 do that before even when it got extremely hot. These also occurred within only a few minutes of the first poweron.

When i did the upgrade on my T40 it did exactly the same thing, the restars was caused by the BIOS it is something it does when it recognize new hardware.

Don't worry if it is not doing it again it is completely normal. :)

That isn't a sign of overheating; if you want, you can check the temperatures with TP FCU, MobileMeter, or NHC and they should be well within a normal range.

It would have to get amazingly hot to shut down within 5 minutes of initial cold boot.

I wouldn't worry about it and, instead, would focus on enjoying your "new" system. :)

After playing around with it further and got a few more shutdowns. However I noticed that linux was in fact doing an automatic software shutdown due to thermal reasons. It was logging messages about the ACPI thermal sensor reading 91-99 C, shutting down, etc. Perhaps the first shutdown while at the bios splash screen was post-reconfiguration like cmarti said and I didn't notice the second shutdown was software initiated, but the next few definitely were.

I got it configured such that it underclocks the CPU and video to their lowest settings early on in the boot process and so far no shutdowns. The temperature is reading 43-44 C steady.

I wonder if I need to get some new thermal compound on the CPU? I took the system half apart and realized I didn't have any but figured it should be usable with underclocking until I get some (and the long fan assembly).

But I'll definitely let this thing run some stress tests tonight while underclocked to make sure there aren't any other problems. Thanks for the replies...

I strongly believe you need the M10 long fan look for one the heating if there is one must come from the GPU.
