2GB Memory in an R32?

#1 Post by blackpath » Mon Nov 27, 2006 11:03 pm

According to all the reference manuals I have read the R32 (2858J3U) should be able to handle a maximum of 1GB RAM memory consisting of two 512MB SODIMMs. However, I was able to upgrade to 1GB about a year ago by installing a single Kingmax PC2700 1GB SODIMM.

Has anyone successfully installed a second 1GB SODIMM in an R32? I have seen instances in the this forum of other Thinkpads such as an A31 with the same reputed 1GB limitation claiming to run 2GB.

I would love to upgrade to 2GB as I use some hefty applications.

Any clues appreciated.

Thanks,
blackpath

Clues we have, but that's all we have. :)

The T30 has been widely reported to support 2GB of memory even though the hardware maintenance manual says it is limited to 1GB. For example, see this page:
http://vm.uconn.edu/~twv00001/t30.htm

T30, you say? What do you care about the T30? Well, as it turns out, the T30 and the R32 both share the Intel 845 chipset. And if the T30 supports 2GB -- and your R32 runs happily with a 1GB module in it -- then the odds of you being able to pop in another 1 GB chunk are pretty high.

Recently I'v seen several problem requests in the RAG forum so I'm posting this that I stopped working on.

I hope this helps.

I have an R40 Thinkpad that is limited to 1 gig per IBM's docs. However, it is also using the Intel 845MP chipset that is commonly found in the T30's (and apparently also in the R32's potentially). I installed 2x1 gig sticks of RAM about 1.5-2 years ago and have had no issues with it.

A friend of mine is running another R40, this one is a model 2681 (mine is a 2896) and he has the Intel 845MP chipset and 1.5 gig of RAM with no issues for nearly as long.

Good luck...

I have an A31. Specs say it should max out at 1gb (2x512), but I have 2x1gb chips in it, and it works splendidly.

I think there might have been a BIOS upgrade before it would recognize both chips? I can't remember for sure, since I upgraded the BIOS anyway, long before I got around to buying more RAM.

My first laptop, the Dell Inspiron 8200, also had the Intel 845 chipset and could support two 1GB modules, maxing out at 2GB. The officially published maximum was (and still is, I think) 2x512MB = 1GB, because when the laptop was introduced 1GB modules didn't exist. I suspect the same is true for the Thinkpad R32, A31, etc.

2GB memory install in Thinkpad R32 successful

Well it's official, 2 1GB SODIMMs are happily functioning inside the R32. What a tremendous difference it makes for software synthesizer applications!

Thanks for all the clues!

I own a A31, running one PC2700 Dane Elec 512Mb and a 256Mb original IBM PC2100 mixed together
Now I want to swap the mem for 2 1Gb PC2700 Infineon.
Should this work? Please advice before I buy them.

Hi blackpath,
This is the A31, I'm not sure it will work for me.
Anyway, I ordered the mem, I'll post the results.

Happy Xmas :D

Grab a copy of CPU-Z or any other utility that can display your motherboards chipset. If you have the Intel 845MP chipset referenced above, you should be good to go. If you have something else, I'd research it by that specific chipset to see if it will support 1 gig sticks. But since the ram is on the way...best of luck!

Sorry, I shouldn't have been so brief. All A31 models (2652, 2853, and 2654) appear to have the 845MP chipset, which is allowing the greater amount of memory. I think it should work!

Happy holidays!

I'm back, with 2 Gb of RAM.
XP freezed, because I had a customised swapfile(another partition) , I increased it to 4Gb, and off it went!
Thanks to all :D
