Favorite Non-thinkpad laptop

#1 Post by Stargate199 » Tue Nov 28, 2006 10:04 pm

I'm just curious to see what other brands you like. Feel free to rant about the complaints of the non-thinkpad laptops you have owned or used.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.
ThinkPad T450s, Core i7 5600u, 12GB RAM, Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD.

I will go with Toshiba Satellite. I tried a 3000 series and it would probably just about tie with the Toshiba as well. :)

The rest, ehhh....I can recount major hardware/software failures that occured multiple times for around 80% of the remainder of the systems in that list which I have used/supported.

Believe it or not, I actually voted for "Dell Inspiron or Latitude", simply because the best non-Thinkpad I have used was the Inspiron 700m.

A few years ago, this would have been Sony Vaio, but theyre quality has gone down the toilet post K Series. The only thing I can say is even close to a TP are the business HP's, which arent listed there. If a TP was not an option, thats probably where I'd lean. I hear the business Dell's arent all that bad either.

Somewhat, in fact, the M65 Precision is actually far better than the M60 Precision. It does seem to be quite an improvement over the original.

How many choices are allowed? I think Apple, Panasonic, Fujitsu and Gateway need to be added.

I prefer Dell 8100.

I voted for the Lenovo 3000. They have a decent feature set without being bloated (feature wise) and are totally industrial in terms of style. The 3000s that I've seen in person seem to be more durable than most other brand laptops as well.

I'll never buy a non-thinkpad. Unless Lenovo quality takes a dive years from now.

My experience with a Gateway M500B1 notebook has me working on my ThinkPad to get her back up in top shape so she can once again be my primary work computer. It's not that the Gateway is a bad machine or anything; it's great for anything that doesn't involve typing or using the stupid touchpad. Trying to type on that thing or move the cursor around makes me feel like I'm working with one hand tied behind my back. Well, no more. I use my laptops primarily for typing and I will never again own a non-ThinkPad if it can at all be helped!

I tried an HP Pavilion dv6103nr, and I just can't get used to it. I'm selling it and looking to buy a T43. I spent more time glancing over at my T23 than I did the HP, even while I was typing on it.

I remember that you bought it for $380. How much are you going to sell it for? Did you sell the $250 Toshiba yet?

I guess you didn't read the black friday thread after I posted again...

Sold the $250 Toshiba for $475. :P

I'm selling the HP for $625, which isn't a bad price for someone who was actually considering paying full price. I'll take it down to $600 if I don't get enough replies. Plus I'm selling a T23 for $275, and most likely picking up the T43 in the marketplace.

My only beef is that the recovery media can only be produced once (don't know if that's how the newer ThinkPads work), and HP wanted to charge me $18. I said F-you, I'm never buying HP again, and hung up.

[censored]! So waiting in line for 12 hours and pissing only once was worth it!

My X40 alllowed me to make recovery disks only once, too. And Lenovo would have charged $45 for those disks. That's even worse than HP, so I urge you never to buy another Thinkpad.

LOL...no more ThinkPads for me! But at least with them I can easily get recovery CD's on here.

And who said anything about using the facilities only once? :P

Lucky for me I only had to wait in line 10 and a half hours. 12 would have been an act of complete desperation.

LOL! If I had a car, I probably would have done the same thing. But since I don't have one, I settled for Staples, which is within walking distance. I was in line for only 20 minutes, but I had drunk a lot of soda that morning and my bladder was bursting, so 20 minutes felt almost like 10 and a half hours.

Back to the topic of this thread: I find it somewhat surprising that the lenovo 3000 got the second highest number of votes.

I initially voted "only thinkpads", but if I were looking for a specific function not available on Thinkpads, I would probably look towards the manufacturer that has it, BUT only for a high end version of their models. Just like vehicles, most brands have cheap low models, but most of the higherend models are good.

Given a brand to choose from now....fujitsu

Well, the Amilo Pro V, Lifebook Q (especially the Q2010), and Lifebook T Series Fujitsu-Siemens notebooks are pretty good from what I have seen. Although I have yet to actually get to know them from a pure hardware-based point of view. :)

It's nice to hear that, because the Q2010 is one of the several ultraportable laptops I am considering to get next summer. I believe it's currently the lightest WXGA laptop available. Unfortunately, it doesn't have internal ethernet, modem, VGA port and microphone.

The way I have seen the users use most of their ultraportables in a "true" ultraportable fashion most often dosen't require any of those ports, with the notable exception of the VGA port for presentations. For a pure, all out meeting note-taker and mobile email/word processing/outlining system, the Q2010 excels. If one gets really desperate, there are always the VGA and Ethernet cable adapter accessories for it (but I myself have tired of dongles greatly).

Although I don't quite know what to make of the layout of the USB ports on the right hand side of it.

When I visit my mom, or when I stay at some cheap motel (Motel 6 is my favorite!), I need a modem for dialup. I need a built-in mic to make piano recordings in the practice rooms at school. And you're right, I give talks at meetings and need a VGA port. Like you, I hate dongles, and don't want to have to worry about misplacing them. The X60s is the lightest laptop I know of that comes with all these ports. Unfortunately, it has a 4:3 ratio display.

Yep, i agree with your post but for me, thinkpad always come first in my mind and yes, Fujitsu quality has improved tremendously over the years. My school recommended Fujitsu lifebooks to all the new students.

10 votes for thinkpad and 4 votes for fujitsu. :-)
