Just got my t60p in...
It's pretty sweet, but a few complaints...
Why does the checking the secure card take forever on every boot up? Is there a fix for this? How do I disable it?
84 processes on first boot!! This is ridiculous! My desktop runs on 19 processes. Is there a list somewhere of all the crap I can remove and still maintain all my usability. I was able to get it down to 47 processes by uninstalling stuff and disabling boot stuff with msconfig, but now I'm getting into the thinkpad processes that I don't know what they do.
This thing is pretty quick in games, but browsing the internet is kind of slow sometimes. It freezes occasionally when watching multiple videos in different explorer windows.
Here are my specs:
t60p 14.1 inch
t7200 with 2 gb 667mhz ram
100 gb 7200 rpm hd
intel pro wireless
radeon firegl v5250
3dmark05 score : 3912
Crap I've disabled: I uninstalled the tvt packet filter from my network devices. I don't know what it does exactly though?
Disabled all symantec programs, google desktop, picasa,
What do these do:
ThinkVantage Amsg?
TPHKMGR?
Also, what process is for the sound volume buttons?

One thing I do when trying to cut down on processes is to Google each process and read up on each description to decide if I needed it or not. Don't take this the wrong way though, I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything. It's just a lot faster my way rather than asking on a forum. There are a lot of sites out there dedicated to explaining these processes due to the exorbiant amount of spyware out there. Someone had to do the dirty work to sort out and explain what was spyware and what wasn't.
Good luck and let us know how your results went.

There were enough discussions about that topic in this forum. Just do an search.
Imho with 2gb of ram it's really not worth to fiddle around on those processes. In fact they will not make you less productive on your machine. On the other hand you will notice that some productivity apps from lenovo may get broken.
And how may times do you run software that needs all of your 2gb ram?
I'm still running my TP with factory preinstalled system. The only thing i uninstalled was Diskeeper since i'm using PerfecDisk instead. And even after 6 month on this TP it still as fast as on the first day. Because i do a lot of SQL-Server and IIS development on that machine i have constatly about 100 processes running. And that with only 1gb of ram. My CPU never get's beyond 50% and i have never run out of memory or even noticed much speed decrease because of swapping memory.
The machine is for working. And i like to run all that apps that make me productive and not count on the number of processes or ram usage. When there will be some app that will really slow down my work on my TP then i will add another 1gb of ram and don't waste my time looking around to disable unneeded processes.
That's my 2 cent. But everyone has to decide on his own.

If you want more information about the processes, real time and without having to play hide-n-go seek with the filenames and functions, then you could also use Process Explorer (formerly from SysInternals) to do so. Otherwise you could just go with ProcessLibrary.com.

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.
