Two bad motherboards in a row? (R40)

#1 Post by mmmkay » Wed Nov 29, 2006 6:16 pm

OK This is starting to become a trend here.. crash when cold, machine just locks up, hangs, etc etc.

Got my second refurbished R40 and it still crashes when it's cold. Suspend and resume are not working unless it's still hot.

I've replaced just about every component that's replaceable short of a new computer.

I thought it might have been a bad interface between the heatsink and CPU but I was sure to be careful this time, and I even removed the sheet of metal over the CPU core to be sure it was flat as possible and used the proper amount of Arctic Silver 5.

Did you reuse any of the old removable components (memory, network/wifi/batteries/...). If so, try disconnecting all and replacing one at a time. Check A/C adapter as well - unlikely to be at fault but worth a check.

Yup, checked all of that, and I've got two AC adapters too.

The only thing different about this board, is that I will sometimes get weird artifacts show up on the screen and it'll flicker and get all weird and colourful.

Time to exchange for the next R40 then!

I have an R40 with those weird screen symptoms as well. I suspect this is an inherent fault with these machines. The symptoms were worse when I had the screen bezel off and just a slight touch on the LCD metal frame would be enough to throw it into a fit. I don't like your chances with the next R40. It's a problem most likely with the graphics chip/memory. Will have to have a look someday...

I'm guessing all you guys have R40s based on Pentium 4-M CPUs?

True in my case. So, is this a well known problem for this series??

I'm not sure. I know though, I have bought two Pentium-M based R40s (2723-26M) and they both work well with no inexplicable quirks or problems. One is my own and another is one I bought for a friend.

I have a Pentium 4-M based R40 which will be 3 years old in a month and I have had fine service from it with none of the issues described above. Hope the original poster has better luck with his next unit.

My unit came with the Celeron Mobile 1.8 which I quickly upgraded to a 2.2GHz Pentium 4-m.

I just noticed that this one has GPU problems too. Like weird artifacts on the screen when coming out of standby/hibernation. The mouse cursor will turn into a scrambled square block and the display will flicker and turn fuzzy.

It seems to happen... yes.. when it's cold.

Grr... time to exchange for another one
