T20 CPU - thermal sponge??

I took apart a T20 yesterday and noticed that there was no, repeat no, thermal paste on the CPU "thermal pad". Instead, attached to the underside of the fan was a silicone/sponge pad!! Huh!! Is this somekind of new conductive material or what? The T20 was working OK but has now a succumbed to the "blink of death". I wonder if it's related? Anyone else notice this on their T20. The T21/22/23 all seem to be thermal paste setups.

The only T20 I've ever opened up was upgraded, so I can't say that it did or didn't have a thermal pad to begin with. It wouldn't surprise me though, since the T20 came after the 600 series, which used thermal pads.

I would ditch the pad if you can, and apply some arctic silver 5.

Yes, I will get rid of the pad but I don't think I can just reuse the fan mount? From memory, the thermal paste setups have a spring loaded set of feet but in this one the feet are solid. I suppose the idea is that the sponge will provide the right amount of pressure. So, I think I'll have to replace the fan mount with a newer model.

Yea, that would do it. I was thinking about the difference in space between the CPU and fan, but you figured it out yourself. There are two fans that will fit in there, one from the T20 and the other from the faster T21 and T22.
