T40p FireGL 9000 opengl kinda dead :-(

#1 Post by boba23 » Fri Sep 03, 2004 3:10 am

hi everyone,

i am using a T40p notebook with a Mobility FireGL 9000 card for almost a year now...last week it's been the first time i really needed the opengl part of the vga card, when trying to play some quake1 (glquake). result: slideshow, game starts but runs at approx 1-2fps :-(
did some more opengl tests/demos/benchmarks, all the same result. so the driver seems to be the cause somehow. what is more, d3d apps/games run absolutely fine and fast.
i tried several drivers, official ibms, omega drivers, dna drivers and even the standart windows driver from windows update....no luck.
i reinstalled winxp incl. SP2, doesn't help either...
i really don't know if i had this problem from the very beginning, since i didnt really need opengl support yet, but anyways.....another issue, is it normal NOT to have an extra opengl tab in ati display driver properties with the firegl card? with regular mobility cards or desktop cards you usually have a tab to set anti aliasing options, vsync and so on ... with my firegl -> nothing, tab is simply not there no matter what driver i use.

any help appreciated.

thanks

boba

t40p/firegl 9000 opengl doesn't work, help!?

#2 Post by Cpgeek » Mon Jan 09, 2006 12:38 am

i too am using a T40p notebook with a Mobility FireGL 9000 and for some reason openGL just plain doesn't work. i've tried updating to the latest version of the drivers from IBM (1rd633ww.exe) but that doesn't seem to help, i've also completely removed my drivers and re-installed them just to make sure that something wasn't currupt somewhere.

i looked at my driver configuration page and it says that opengl is enabled, i even tried unchecking the box, rebooting when it told me to, checking the box, rebooting when it told me to, and then trying to use an opengl application again and still no luck.

does anybody have any ideas?

Maybe drivers from ati.com would work and be better? It'd be worth a try anyway.

I still can't find proper Mobility FireGL 9000 drivers on ATI's site, however, I used the utility found here:

http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/

and forced the Mobility Radeon 9000 drivers to install which seems to work pretty well actually... i'm not sure what features are disabled in this driverset, i'm assuming that i can kiss 3dsmax / XSI / Maya custom drivers good by though...

does anybody know where to get the proper ATI (non-ibm) drivers for this?

Yeah, I have given up on OpenGL on my T40p. The IBM software is a piece of sh...! Old, buggy software.
But stable as hell. (so stable, that you get nowhere...)

Sorry, but the newest driver just sucks. ATI does not offer OpenGL drivers, only the regular Radeons.
Instead I have diverted all graphics software to DirectX now.

I still wonder, why IBM is selling those Txxp series, which are useful for OpenGL graphics only, but don't offer a useful driver. it is useless.

I have decided to skip the expensive p models and stay with the normal ATI chips (better and faster and... cheaper).

Try dumping the IBM stock drivers and switching to the Omega drivers. They might work for you.
