Restore/Recover CDs english...
Hi all,
I bought a T42p in France...because I had to. And it has the french OS, with bread and cheese. I can generate the restore CDs but it will restore the french winXP pro.
Do you know if I can have a EN version of my winXP? if so, where?

You can buy the Multilanguage User Interface CD for Windows XP in France, and with it, make all of your menu's, etc. to appear as if the entire O.S. is English. I do this with English Windows and Japanese Multilanguage User Interface CD so I can use my TP at work and use Japanese programs with it. It works very well and it only takes a couple of clicks in the Regional/Language section of Control Panel once MLUI is set up, to set everything back to its orinigal language.
One word of caution: When upgrading to large upgrades like SP2, set the original language back when using Windows Update or else the wrong file may upgrade your computer and render it so it won't boot up. This happened to me and it was a hard lesson to learn...there's no warnings about this. After the upgrade, you can set it back to the language you want, or you can download the correct file (very large) and upgrade from within your computer to assure absolute success.
Good luck! I mention this method because it works and will keep you from having to reinstall windows all over again.

No No No!
Hi,
I was also in the same candition, when I got my T4x machine in Germany. If you get a normal user laptop (not a education/student offer), you can even order UK English+French KB/powerpack options. But you should have done this before getting your T4x notebook.
If you ask IBM after getting your machine, they say "No! No! IBM never supplies a different language XP other than the one which was given in hidden partition"
Instead, you can order a new set of English(US) XP recovery CDs for $30+shipping from Bill (the owner of this forum) which works fine when you install it from your machine. Again, this is NOT legal though you have a french XP serial no. But, you can manage!!
Installation is not a problem, cos IBM XP recovery never asks for serial no. They just use their standard OEM methods to get it up and running. If you must go for a legal XP recovery pack, it'll cost around 400+ euros for the whole pack.
Gool luck

Someone asked about the MLUI (Multi Language User Interface). It is a version of XP. It comes with a full install XP CD and all the other languages, in regions on other CD's. You are suppose to intall the XP Disc first (as the O.S.) and then use the MLUI disc (whatever region you choose...East Asia, Central Europe, etc.) and intall it once XP is installed. If you don't use the second set of discs, all you have is a regular install of Windows XP. When you put the second disc in you can select which languages you want from it, so you don't have to install the whole thing.
Here's what I found. The first disc is not needed if you already have XP installed, so the second disc is the one you need (for whatever language).
The set was available to us for English Windows, and second (language) discs were labeled, for: "East Asian Languages," "Central European Languages," etc....we installed East Asian one and just selected Japanese during the install for the MLUI (you can select them all if you wanted...it was sort of like selecting the parts of Microsoft Office during its setup). Funny thing...these second set of discs, when installing, don't ask for any CD Key. Guess Microsoft figures you have that from the original XP that you installed or the OEM O.S. that came on your machine.
So, I would think that in Germany or in France, there would be the same thing in reverse. You have French or German Windows XP and you can add English MLUI from a disc that says "American Languages, which probably includes U.S. English, Canadian French, Mexican Spanish, Brazilian Portequese, etc.
If you are running English windows, and need information on installing one of the other region MLUI's, PM me. I may be able to give you a lead, or even do better...nothing illegal, of course.

I don't know if this is any use to you, but I bought my T42 from Bill (therefore it has a full US XP) and I live in France. I bought a French keyboard (41€ delivered) from IBM France and simply selected the language as French so that the correct keyboard is recognised (AZERTY instead of QWERTY)
Up until now I've had no problem with an English O/S running with French programmes....

well I guess I can get use to the AZERTY keyboard... I guess I'll need it for accents.
I'll be running french, US and japanese software. With my old US version of winXP, I had no problem using japnese or french soft...with the French one I have some weird characters replacing accents and so on. But I have to use Japanese as the default font code page. So US winXP would be much nicer for me.

Searched with google and found the following (this is for Win XP Home but the Professional version should not be different)
• Language Version Selection. Manufacturer may have elected to provide you with a one-time selection of two or more language versions of the SOFTWARE as part of the SOFTWARE setup process. In such event, you are licensed to use only one of the language versions provided. Once you have used a language version, you are not licensed to use any of the other language versions that Manufacturer may have included with the COMPUTER
