set machine type / SN for my T42

#1 Post by elim » Fri Dec 01, 2006 6:15 pm

I get my T42 month ago from ebay, everything works fine but ibm cannot find the machine type of it. And that makes auto software update impossible.

Trying to find a solution and read some docs, I see that when update the bios, there is a chance to enter the machine type and the serial number of the laptop, which is printed on a sticker at the bottom of the laptop.

My question is that is that all for IBM to recognize the machine type and SN?, and is there any other way to set the machine name and SN?

Thanks a lot

Hi,
I have the exact same problem with my T40. I have been doing everything (put in the model and serial number) manually. Is there anyway that I can program out the Model and Serial number in? I have my MB replaced last month at our local IBM service center. The tehnician just forgot to put in the serial number. Well, it should be OK. However, it will be great if my MB has its own serial number...

I had this same problem 3 years ago, ended up going to a local IBM approved service center, all it took was using the hardware maintence diskette and 5 minutes and all was fixed. Just call up IBM and ask them how they plan on fixing this.
