My old man steps on my T40 *LMK your Samsung 11p8348 mdl#*

#1 Post by belteshazzar » Fri Sep 03, 2004 4:01 pm

Here is the abridged story. My old man puts the T40 in the computer bag, leaves it on the floor. And when lifting up a 10 year old Star laser printer, steps on the bag rather absentmindly. And bobs your uncle, a cracked screen.

Now I need your help guys. The screen was a IDTech 11p8346 SXGA+. I want to replace it. What is the cheapest way possible with or without voiding the warranty.

I am thinking about putting in a Samsung 14.1 SXGA+. I need to know the exact LCD model number. Thanks Also if you can give me the inverter number too, I'll greatly appreciate it.

You could try to get thinkpad parts direct from IBM, I don't think it would void the warranty but the new LCD would not be covered under the notebook warranty. You could also call IBM and ask them how much it is going to cost you to have them replace the LCD. The other option is to look on Ebay for T40 parts or for another T40, see what your model is going for on Ebay as it might be cheaper to buy a used one from someone than to pay for a new LCD as the LCD is the most expensive component in the notebook and can easily cost up to $800 or more just for the LCD itself.

I just found this place, you might call them and get a quote on a new LCD. Did the top cover of the notebook get damaged as well?
Let me know how much they are charging for LCDs and what size your was.

Does anyone know if I can purchase a samsung SXGA+ screen off of eBay? Will the connections fit? Will the volatages need to be the same?
Also What is the model number of the Samsung Screen. Not the 11p8348 number but the other original Samsung model number? Is it also possible to buy a XGA screen for the notebook even though the T40 was originally using a SXGA screen? Lastly do I need a new inverter? Help me guys, common!
God Bless you.

Do you (or your "old man", have homeowner's insurance?

Check with them, if covered they'll probably replace the unit.

Caution. The insurance industry these days is looking for every excuse under the sun to jack up rates or deny policy renewals. Making small claims, for sure anything under $1,000 or so, is like waving a red flag in front of a bull. Save your claims for the big catastrophes.

You would need to find the Samsung part number and then you could use any Samsung screen with the correct part number. Your inverter may still be OK and you can reuse it if it is. Otherwise you are going to need an inverter that is an exact match for what is in your machine. Inverters are screen specific, XGA will not work in SXGA, SXGA will not work in SXGA+ and so forth. Cables are sometimes but not alway display specific. Yours may also be OK. If I was you, I would remove the display from your notebook and find the Samsung part number. It will be on a tag on the back side. It will begin with LTN150xxxx for 15 inch, LTN141xxxx for 14 inch. As long as you find the exact part number it will work in your notebook no matter what other notebook it came out of. You will have to try your inverter and cable and see if its OK. You may be able to pick one off of ebay for as low as $150.

However I have a ID Tech screen. Is that interechangable with the Samsung Screen? Do I need a new inverter and are the sockets and plugs different?
God Bless you.
