Another Noobie Question

#1 Post by Litza » Sun Dec 03, 2006 1:50 pm

I bought a T42 2373 about 6 months ago on E-Bay, I'll chalk it up as a learning experience. It arrived with no serial number sticker, but seems to be working alright. I restarted the computer with Disks supplied by IBM, and am happy enough with the deal, though I know if I have further problems IBM will not work on my laptop with the sticker missing...

Problem is, I still use dial up (a problem itself  ) and when I am using the computer at the blazing connection speed of 31k it drops the connection, and tries to redial! A real pain when I am trying to download something! I think it has something to do with a hierarchy of possible connections, it always finds a secure wireless network in my 'hood before I dial in.

Anybody think that disabling this searching for a wireless network may be what is causing my disconnections? The regular home PC has no such problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried disabling the wireless card before dialing in?

Its not difficult to disable the wireless radio (antenna). Just push Fn+F5 and select Radio off and see if that stops the connections from dropping.

If you get an error message about needing to update your drivers when Fn+F5 is pushed, go through Access IBM and update all relevant drivers for your wireless card.

Good luck.

Fn+F5 did the trick! I've been online for over an hour now with no disconnects. Thanks folks. Hopefully I will remember to turn the radio on before I start scratching my head while attempting to use the awesome wireless at my local library!
