T40 Warranty Coverage?

#1 Post by r00 » Mon Dec 04, 2006 3:34 am

I bought my T40 off of ebay last month and I'm loving it, but there are a few things I've noticed. The first and most important thing I noticed was a white pressure point on the screen on the right side about 1/4" by 1/4". It's not extremely noticable but you know once you find something it's always there.

Second thing I noticed which was yesterday is that my U key is bent a little to the left and makes the keyboard unlevel.

I did a warranty check on lenovo.com just out of curiousty and low and behold it's covered until the 27th of this month! I was wondering what exactly can be covered / repaired? Since I'm not the original buyer can I still ship them my laptop and get a brand new screen and keyboard? Or even just pop off one of the keys to get a whole new keyboard (it's a little faded, wouldn't mind a nice new keyboard :) ),

Even if you can point me in the right direction.

thanks a lot

I think I found what I needed:

Mfg part # FRU part # Description Serviceable?
11P8356 11P8350 14.1 INCH LCD DISPLAY FRU NO

I'm assuming that the LCD isn't under warranty and I can't get it replaced?

Hi!

The warranty will not cover thr lcd because that is something that happened because of the other user.

For the keyboard just call ibm and tell them that it is not working and they will ship you a new one so you can replace it yourself .

Actually, you never know what may or may not be covered. Sometimes you get a nice (or generous) agent and they just send a box and pretty much replace anything you complain about.

The best thing to do is call, tell them you've had a few problems for a while, are thinking about extending your warranty, but would like to get them fixed now as not to have any issues.

Describe the problems in detail and wait for an answer. You might be happily surprised.

Good luck.

P.S. Verify that your optical drive is working properly before calling - you might need that replaced, too.

For T40 series machines, I would also check to make sure that the USB ports are working at USB 2.0 rather than USB 1.1 as this is a well documented point of failure for these machines. This failure usually requires a new motherboard to fix so you should definitely take the time to make sure that USB is fine as new motherboards are expensive.

Look for the "This device can work faster" message when you plug in a USB stick as it is a pretty reliable indicator of this problem. You can search the forum for a better description.
