i was almost ready to download then i realised: I listen to like ZERO media files (i.e., mp3s) on my machine. So, i figured: what's the point. But, have read good reviews. Allows creation of mp3s now, from what i hear.

Yes, there's finally a MP3 encoder but it only supports 128, 192, 256, and 320 Kbps MP3 ripping.

hmmmm.... what do you mean by 'only' - i woulda thought those options pretty much cover just about everyone's needs, no? Maybe I'm missing something?

Does it support VBR?

I'll stick with media player classic, sometimes zoom player, for viewing and lame for mp3 encoding

DavidNZ,

True 192 is perhaps close enough to 160Kbps - but still, if you want 160, you'll still need a third party encoder.

wow - didn't know that! that's interesting...

When I had my R32, I bought a minidisc recorder (MZ-N710). It came with Sonic Stage, thus allowing you to stick a CD in your drive, convert it to Sony's ATRAC3 format, and then upload via USB to the unit. I found that whole process rather cumbsersome, so I switched to recording, in real time, from my stereo to the MD unit using an optical cable. The result is a direct digital copy with superb fidelity (especially with my Sennheiser phones). If anything, it brough me back to my youth when I (and didn't we all?) used to make mixed tapes (sometimes for girlfriends!).

Anyway, this post got me thinking about the new Sony hard-drive based walkman (NW-HD1 - review here: http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/20gb-sony- ... eview.html). It doesn't allow direct optical recording but, if i did buy it, it would mean using Sonic Stage to upload files (albeit a newer version of Sonic Stage which, by some accounts, is much better than the one I used). I'm just not sure if I'm ready to give up the 'feel' of creating minidiscs in real-time. If anyone reading this is *not* a child of the 80s, they might not understand!

Enough rambling. It's 7.15am on Sunday morning here in New Zealand, it's cold, and I need coffee in a big way...

Oh I understand DavidNZ - I was one of the rather foolish ones that paid over $500 (albeit Canadian dollars) for a Walkman in the 80s. Thanks for the info about the new hard-drive based music player. I did read something about it recently (I seem to recall something about the Nav Wheel looking control not actually being a nav wheel as on the iPods).

Imran>

I had heard about some issues with RecordNow and beta versions of the WMP 10. Strange that they would not have worked around that for the release.

Personally I've stayed away from all the newest versions of Windows Media Player and just use Codecs I've downloaded for the different encoding and decoding I've done. In fact, I still use the ole reliable WMP V6.4. I think it loads faster and I don't need Media Library. That with the use of Tsunami Filter Pack (all types of Codec files...warns you on install if you're doubling up or are going to cause a codec to be messed up with which ever codec you're trying to install...very helpful) works very well for me. Just do a search for Tsunami Filter Pack if you're interested in it. By the way, even after you upgrade, install, whatever the newest WMP, if you'll look in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player you'll still find the 'ole, reliable "mplayer2.exe" there....it's version 6.4. Just make a shortcut to your desktop and you can use it and compare how it works compared to the newer stuff. The newer stuff will give you the codecs that V6.4 will use so there shouldn't be a file that the newest can play that it can't.

Media Player Classic (freeware) + ffdshow is the preference here. Small (1mb!!!), great quality and very very fast.
