Monitor turns on by itself after Fn+F3

I´m having trouble making the my laptop screen behave!
It turns on without me ever touching it...(please no bad jokes)

Any suggestions?

I believe that a drifting Trackpoint (or mouse) will be enough to wake up the system and turn on the backlight to the display. There may be other things (network wake-on LAN?) that could cause this issue as well.

Is there a way to only let it wake on keyboard?

Does the mouse really drift that often? This happens every time I shut the monitor in about 10 minutes...maybe something else what do you think?

I don't know of any way to limit the "wake-up" to just keyboard inputs. Generally, with the way that Windows has been setup, any signal from the keyboard or mouse (and possibly LAN) is enough to re-activate the system from standby. If you have an external mouse try disconnecting it to see if that is the cause. A high-sensitivity setting of mouse (pointer speed) and a simple bump to the table that the mouse rests on, can be enough to wake a system.

OK, this thread is getting confused here. Are we talking about waking up from standby or waking up from "power save" state. Those are very different. Waking up from standby normally requires a deliberate trigger (e.g. opening the lid, or pressing the Fn key a couple of times). Waking up from "power save" can be triggered by any input on the keyboard or mouse. If sensitivity is high enough, a slight vibration might trigger the trackpoint.

The only way to real way for the user to wake the system from an S3 Suspend powerstate is either through pressing the power button, opening the lid (activating the lid switch), or hitting the Fn key. I suspect this is about a power saving state after an idle timeout period.

We are talking about shutting the screen off to save batteries and have the computer doing some work for me that I don´t have to monitor.

Still not working...I´m not using a mouse by the way. Right now it is happening with random intervals while playing some mp3s in mediaplayer.

Are you using Fn+F3 to turn off the LCD? And then after a short period of time, the LCD activates on it's own? If so, and if you do not have an external mouse, then I would bet that a strong enough vibration is causing the Trackpoint to "move". If you are playing MP3 files, are you using the speakers built-into the laptop? If yes, try turning up the volume to see if the screen comes on right away. Conversely, turn the volume down or use external speakers to see if the screen remains off. Double-check the mouse properties to see what sensitivity/speed is enabled. Turn it down to low/slow and monitor your screen.

rkawakami...Thanks! It seems to be from the vibrations from the internal speakers...it happened when playing with external speakers too but maybe the internal speakers were on at the same time I´m not sure

When compressing a large file recently with monitor off and no music on nothing happened. The monitor stayed off.

Something related...

I use Fn + F3 to turn off the display while I am sleeping while at the same time I am listening to internet radio from my ThinkPad. I have a CyberLink remote control that I use that works with an infrared receiver plugged into the USB port. If I change the volume with the button on the remote control, the laptop screen lights up again. I wish I knew a way to change the volume with the remote without the screen lighting up every time.

[For those of you wondering, I could not get the IR port on the ThinkPad to work reliably with the remote control - hence the need to use the USB remote control receiver.]
