A couple of T23 questions...

#1 Post by jamiphar » Mon Dec 04, 2006 7:08 pm

Does the caddy for a 600 series optical drive or hard drive fit these? Also, can the T23 be upgraded past a 1.3ghz PIII and 1gb of RAM?

Thanks!

No, the Ultraslimbay of the 600 is not directly compatible with the Ultrabay 2000 of the T23. You can swap optical drives between the two bays as long as you change the rails (caddy) and notch the bezel for the Ultrabay 2000. For the hard drive caddy, the ones normally used in the 600 have a tab at the end so that you can grab onto it and pull out the drive. The caddys for the T23 do NOT come with the tab since you mount the hard drive cover to the drive and pull that out with the drive.

I don't know about the CPU upgrade but I believe that the limit of the T23 is 1GB and is due to the chipset being used (Intel 830MP).

Thanks a lot, Ray!

In that case, I guess I'm looking to buy a cd-rom caddy for it.
I'm expecting a T23 to arrive tomorrow, it doesn't have a hard drive or optical drive, but I have both of those.

It may be easier to buy a cheap Ultrabay 2000 CDROM drive (with rails) then it is to try to find somebody just selling the rails (I've looked before; it's pretty rare). What I normally do to upgrade optical drives for the T23 is to buy a drive (DVD-RW) for non-IBM systems and then use the rails from my existing drive. Which means I now have several bare drives without any rails to mount them into Thinkpads :) .

Hmm, that may not be a bad idea. I just made a thread in the marketplace to see if anybody has one. If this doesn't work, then I'll probably try your suggestion.

I just ran across this on eBay... I'm not recommending it; it's just FYI:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0055040364

$35AUD (~$27.50) for the rails for an Ultrabay 2000 drive. You could probably pick up a used (or even a dead) CDROM for half the price. Just be sure to ask the seller that all three rail pieces and screws come with the drive.

BTW, I've got more then 8 T23s at the moment... probably closer to 13. I think that three of them still need some hardware work to be sellable/reliable.

You wouldn't happen to have a drive that you'd want to sell, would you? Maybe you have 13 T23s and 14 drives. :P

I think the only spare drives I have now are 3 "pathetic" 6GB drives I received in a couple of 2647-4NUs. I believe they are good; I haven't had time to run them through any diags. PM me if you are interested.
