Z61p Quality, Brightness & Viewability of Display / Scre
Does anyone actually own a z61p with Core 2 duo?
Reason for asking, I need someone to perform following test and get back with me. No one from lenovo nor any of their distributors have been able to answer this simple question:
How does the screen look on z61p with Core 2 Duo, the ATI MOBILITY FireGL V5200 and 15.4" WUXGA (1920x1200)
When watching DVD ( movie )
A. Is screen viewable in bright sunlight
B. Is screen viewable from a wide angle
C. How far to either side can video be watched
Again, please do not post any responses unless you own a z61p with the core 2 duo and can actually test viewability by inserting a DVD movie and watching it:
A. outside during day when it's bright
B. off center ( upto & including 180 degrees )
Is the screen very bright or dull?
The newer dells, hp's & sony's, etc... look good outside in daylight.
a. sony : sz series 13.3" WXGA 1280x800 w/xbrite
b. hp : dv9000t 17" WXGA+ 1440x900 Ultra BrightView
c. dell : xps M1710 17" WUXGA 1920x1200
d. toshiba : Satelite series & Qosmio
Applications such as windows, excel etc.. always look good. I want to know how videos look.
Prices on z61p's are very good right now, but shipping is delayed until possibly middle of Jan 2007 or Feb 2007.
To get good price you have to place order with lenovo sales over phone. Prices listed on their web are ~1000 to $1300 over what they charge when placing order via phone.
Thanks in advance...

Re: Z61p Quality, Brightness & Viewability of Display /
You sure about that? Every single Dell, HP, or Sony screen I've seen (including the newer Dell & HP's) wouldn't be viewable at all in "bright sunlight from practically 180 degrees off center." In fact, most HP screens have rather poor viewing angles and almost every notebook screen will die in bright sunlight. Sounds like you're expecting a lot...sgrateful wrote:The newer dells, hp's & sony's screens permit videos to be watched in bright sunlight from practically 180 degrees off center.
Have used just about every ThinkPad since the T42 days...

Processor does not determine how the screen looks in those positions, in fact neither does the video card. A lot of those positions you describe won't be very visible unless the Z61p unit you're looking at has Flexview, and then even that is limited by the basic nature of an LCD screen.sgrateful wrote:fbrdphreak,
How does your z61m screen look?
a. is it bright, crisp, clear?
b. how's viewing angle when watching movies inside?
Does your z61m have core 2 duo?
Have you placed order for z61p?
I have a Z60m with MaxBright Screen and I would say that
1. Plugged in, it's probably visible in fairly bright sunlight.
2. As wide as I can go is about 90-100 degrees in either direction without getting really weird color distortion
3. Like I said above
As for your second section:
1. This question is exactly the same as the first one. Consider that the laptop is LCD driven. These screens just aren't going to be like your CRT in the outside.
2. This question is exactly the same as the one you said above.
3. Is the screen dull? Not really if you're plugged in. The MaxBright screen on my Z60m is 300nit. I'm sure the Z61p is probably 200 or 250nit - which is brighter than most new laptops from other manufacturers.
I would highly dispute that "other companies look good outside." They have glossy screens which make for horrible glare. LCD screens just aren't outside - bright conditions units.
When I watch movies on my laptop, they look awesome. I just watched Tokyo Drift last night and it was great. But, I was plugged in.

Thanks Manarius for your detailed response.
Although my laptop will be used primarily to run vmware and host multiple o/s:
Solaris 10,
Windows 2003 enterprise server
XP Pro & 2003 Office Pro, Visio, etc...
Vista Ultimate or Business & 2007 Office Pro, Visio, etc...
RedHat Linux RHEL4
I enjoy watching movies and converting to divx during my down time ( R&R)
I realize cpu speed will not have any impact on screen brightness, clarity or viewing angle. Reason for asking about cpu type,:only newer thinkpads come with Core 2 Duo's.
Athough older thinkpads with similar model number screens may look good, there's no guarantee lenovo will maintain or improve upon same model screens when newer Thinkpads are released.
Again, thanks for your feed back. I'll check for maxbright and possibly consider z61m if it's available.
Side note: there should be an option to maintain screenbrightness when AC is removed and you're running on battery power, either in bios or in display properties ( right click on your desktop select properties / screen saver / power)

There is an option to do as such, but battery life will suffer immensely. I just turn the brightness down to 0 when I'm battery to get good battery lifesgrateful wrote:Side note: there should be an option to maintain screenbrightness when AC is removed and you're running on battery power, either in bios or in display properties ( right click on your desktop select properties / screen saver / power)
