Hibernation is one of the settings available under the Power Option Properties (right-click Desktop, Properties, Screen Saver Tab, Power button, Power Schemes Tab). Different settings for standby and hibernation timers are available for battery power or AC adapter. If you still want the hibernate function, set the timer to whatever time you think is reasonable. However, even if you set both hibernate timers in the current scheme, Windows XP sometimes forgets which scheme should be active. Therefore, you may also want to select every one of the schemes and set ALL of the hibernate timers the same.

I use hibernation a lot and all of my machines act the same way. Think about it. When you hibernate at time "X", and then wake your machine up a couple of hours later at time "Y" but do nothing with it, Windows will conclude that the amount of inactive time is Y-X hours, thus it's time to go to sleep again.
The solution is to do something (move the mouse even) as soon as the machine comes out of hibernation. This will reset the timer that's keeping track of the amount of inactive time on the machine.
I agree that the algorithm used by Windows could be smarter here.
