W2K/XP v3.13 Mouse/TrackPoint driver for x40 not installing

#1 Post by whickman » Sat Sep 04, 2004 3:15 am

IBM posted a new x40 driver for the mouse and TrackPoint on Sept. 1, version 3.13. This new version doesn't completely install and keeps trying to reinstall on restart. The installation window keeps searching for "tp4track.sys," which the new version placed in c:\drivers\w2k\tpoint.

I try to direct the installation window to c:\drivers\w2k\tpoint to pick up the tp4start.sys file, but the installation fails because it says it can't locate the file it needs. tp4start.sys is also in c:\windows\system32\drivers. Both .sys files are dated 8/4/2004, the latest available on the system.

I'll probably use system restore to go back. Otherwise, is anyone else having a problem with this IBM driver upgrade?

I saw the update this morning, but once I realised that all it fixed was:

"Scrolling in Microsoft PowerPoint while editing a graph object will make it disappear."

I didn't even bother, even though i use PowerPoint quite a bit.

Restore sounds like best option, but you can also use the ThinkPad Software Installer to roll-back, although I've never done this myself.

Update: I uninstalled the driver and deleted the newer tp4track.sys from c:\drivers\w2k\tpoint and the c:\windows\system32\drivers folders. The older driver was in the c:\\drivers\others\ folder.

I rebooted. When it asked for the driver, I directed it to the c:\drivers\others folder. It installed without a hitch.

Bottom line: Don't install the updated v3.13 from the IBM site!

It is working fine for me on a Windows 2000 A22e machine. I can't try it on my own laptop because it uses the UltraNav driver. ... JDHurst
