"Create Recovery Discs" won't work

#1 Post by NikeChicago » Tue Dec 05, 2006 5:33 am

So I bought a new 100GB 7200rpm HDD, and need to reinstall all the factory Thinkpad stuff. Problem is, when I go to Access IBM -> Create Recovery Discs, it pops up the window to make them, but when I click OK, nothing happens. I know that there are other ways of doing this, by either backing everything up to DVDs manually or imaging the hidden partition and whatnot, but does anyone know a way to fix the Recovery Disc program? I got the laptop brand new (fell off a truck... but still new) so it shouldn't have any problem with it, but this also means I can't just call IBM for a new set of recovery CDs. Any help is appreciated.

The program is located here: C:\IBMTOOLS\utils\spi\reccd.exe

Try running the program by navigating to it in Explorer and double-clicking on it directly.

It's actually in the "spi" folder, and trying that is giving me the same result. The window pops up that tells you "Click OK to make a set of product recovery discs" but when I click OK, that window disappears and nothing else happens. Thanks for the idea though. Any other ideas?

You can order the Recovery Disks from Lenovo - unless for some reason you are not the rightful owner. I am not quite sure what you mean by "fell off a truck". :?

After running the program and clicking Ok, did you wait a few minutes before aborting the operation (assuming you did)?
If so, you should try waiting because at this time, the hidden partition is being enabled temporarily and the recover files are being constructed, only after the operation completes will you be able to start making the actual CDs.

@GomJabbar - I'll suffice it to say it would be a bad idea to give IBM my serial number lol

@bontistic - It's not that it stops responding, or I abort operation or anything, just after I click OK the window disappears and nothing at all happens. I could let it sit for an hour, or keep doing whatever I was doing beforehand. Nothing at all. No cpu activity or nothin.

And without rebooting, what happens when you try to re-launch the same application and click Ok?

Same thing. As many times as I try.

i don't think that we can help you further on this particular thinkpad..

if it IS stolen or otherwise misappropriated it is not the mission of this forum to help when we are aware of the facts..
to do so would be aiding in an illegal activity..

i am sorry, but i will now lock this thread..
