Software Installer v. System Update II
Software Installer v. System Update II
I've only recently noticed the presence of System Update II on my T30. I think it's a new addition - - I don't recall seeing it in the past and I've certainly never run it before.
Q: Do I need both Software Installer and System Update II? It appears theres quite a bit of over-lap between the two programs.
Thanks.

Someone may shed more light than I, but I also have both but the System Update doesn't work for me as it can't identify my model# (I think some innards must have been replaced) but Software Installer I set up to show my model and I run the program myself to check for updates. System Update goes out onto the internet by itself periodically (I think you can set the schedule) to check for updates. I am satisfired with using just Software Installer.

I would just go with using the Software Installer for that; SU2 doesn't really add anything new to the whole process except for some scheduling and background features. They both appear to get the same packages.

OK, thanks. That was my impression, too. I have no idea how SUII got on my machine, that's what concerns me. I've never noticed it prior to last week.
I prefer to be the gatekeeper on stuff like this as my hard drive fills up.

What is Intel PROset and is it something I need? I believe Software Installer says it's "mandatory".
Thanks.
Provides an application for monitoring status and activities in both cards and shows a tray icon.
Don't remove it. Really mandatory.

I've been running without it for several years. I put it back recently. Have been having all sorts of odd disconnect issues with Access Connections (wireless portion). Trying to sort out what changes may have occurred.
Thx.

That's why it was the first thing I removed when I got the T43! I had nothing but problems with it on the R40, and judging by the number of complaints on here, I think it's OK to do.uberT wrote:all sorts of odd disconnect issues with Access Connections.

dsigma, thanks for the reply. I am just trying to sort thru recent networking changes. I am not blaming PROset, but I am wondering if it's actually needed (I have no idea what it does, it's certainly not intuitive) since I had run so long without it.

I don't see why you would need it. As far as I can see, it's just another means of connecting to the internet. If you're using Windows to manage connections, or even AC, why would you need a third option?

I have spent no time to learn about PROset, it looked like a diagnostic tool to me. Furthermore, I've never seen it mentioned by anyone.

Intel PROset is a diagnostic and informational utility for the integrated network card; unnecessary for me in my years of ThinkPad usage. Same for the PROset Wireless software; the wireless software is designed to replace the Windows Wireless Zero Config, but of course pales in comparison to Access Connections. IMO it is unnecessary, as it offers little benefit over the Windows wireless config.
Have used just about every ThinkPad since the T42 days...

Software Installer was supposed to replace Software Updater
Software Installer as I remembered as mentioned by IBM was supposed to be replace by Software Updater. SU you run from the Productivity Center which would be anothe kind of Control Panel for all the ThinkAdvantage software.
Whats the major pro and cons?
For Software Installer, The advantage is SPEED and resume downloading. As for Software Updater, it offers no choice, the download is slow and you can't resume download.
I would go with Software Installer and Gigaget

This link for Software Installer,
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... OFT-UPDATE
appears to indicate that it's being replaced by System Update.
However, they are still shipping versions of Software Installer, thankfully.
To check for updates, I always use Software Installer, it's quicker and more accurate. I recently did a clean install on my T30 and installed all the ThinkPad software by hand, so I *KNOW* what I installed.
System Update still thinks I'm missing the update to WinDVD and I'm at the wrong level of DLA. It is *WRONG* on both counts.
