Buzzing Noise

#1 Post by mcooper » Tue Dec 05, 2006 11:15 am

Hello,

I have owned this thinkpad T42 for quite an long time now and since day 1 the unit has always emitted a high pitch buzzing noise when running from the mains.

When the laptop is running from batteries the noise almost completely disappears. I have seen many other references to the problem on other thinkpad models and various ideas on how to eliminate it. However, after trying most of these I can say that none of them have any effect whatsoever (the things I tried include disabling USB controller power management and updated the bios etc).

Does anybody else who has a thinkpad with the same problem know of a fix or whether IBM/Lenovo will do anything about it?

Thanks

Could this be a BIOS issue? I own a T42p but I've never had the noise you describe it. My machine is quite quiet

I have never encountered it as a continuous buzzing off of mains; in that case, I would send it in for IBM/Lenovo to have a look at it. It really shouldn't be doing that.

But she is an IBM.

Have you been able to isolate the source of the sound at all? If it is only buzzing when on mains, it could easily be the AC/DC converter (power brick) causing it. Without having a spare to test with, there isn't much of a way to test for that.

I think with my ear up against my power brick it does make a slight buzz/hum, but that is to be expected.

I have one (elderly) power brick than makes a nasty high-pitched whining noise -- but only when there is no ThinkPad connected. I plug the cord into one of the ThinkPads, and the brick goes silent.

Hello,

I faced the same issue than you this morning (noise from the mains, silent when on battery) and solved it by modify the Power Scheme when using AC power : CPU Speed Adaptive.

Best Regards,

Hi,

Thanks for the reply

Yes I have tried virtually everything to eliminate the noise including changing the power management settings and so on. However, none of this has had any affect whatsoever.

update

Just to update people on this topic. I got in touch with IBM and they sent an engineer out (as I have the on site warranty).

The engineer replaced the main board and the problem has now been resolved.
