T23 4NU revival?

#1 Post by Brad » Wed Dec 06, 2006 4:11 am

Hello,

I have just received a dead T23.

No lights, no nothing. I swapped a known good a/c adapter with the same results. I am thinking motherboard. Even though I may have answered my own question I thought bringing my problem to all here may bring something else to light.

If indeed the motherboard needs replacing where can I find a reasonably priced motherboard?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Brad, Check out this thread: T23 Inductor Thread. Hopefully the thread will become a sticky someday (hint..hint..).

You should check out the main fuses on the motherboard as well.
Good Luck!

Thanks down under.

I checked out the thread. I will check when I take this baby apart. ere shall I look for the fuses and where is a good place for replacements?

Also anyone have a good source for motherboards?

Thanks

It's almost better than even odds that it is the inductors. As for the fuses, check them first - the main ones are easy to spot under the keyboard. Our local T23 guru, Ray, has I believe sourced a supply for the main fuses. As for motherboards post a request in the Marketplace Forum.
Cheers

Don't get you hopes too high on it being an inductor problem.

The most significant symptom of the inductor problem, is that the initial lights will come on and the fan will pulsate.

I would say that no lights, no fan, no display, no nothing is probably due to a fuse, broken DC jack, bad power connection or fried component than the inductor problem (that's just my guess). Before you take the time to rip out the motherboard, check the fuses protecting the DC jack and battery. I have a picture of the ones inline with the battery here:

http://www.rkawakami.net/ibm_t2x/main_fuses.jpg

The ones protecting the main power input can be found by following the wires from the DC jack to the motherboard. There is a small white connector which accepts the plug from the DC jack. Just "below" that motherboard connector is a fuse which looks like a glass or plastic chip. They are either 7A or 10A Littelfuse parts which can be ordered from Mouser.com for about $1 each. I believe I posted that info here in another thread; I'll go see if I can dig it out. There also appears to be a couple of thermal fuses located near the white ceramic fuses. They look like a flat, green rectangles. Check those as well.

You will of course need a multimeter to check the fuses. If you do find a blown fuse, be careful when replacing it. The fuse blew for a reason. If you don't remove/fix the problem of the excessive current, the replacement fuse will probably suffer the same fate, or even worse, something else on the motherboard will fry (ref: Ray's attempt at creating a LET). Actually, now that I look at the picture I posted in that thread, you can see the F2 fuse protecting the DC power input at the top of the picture. The F10 fuse is next to the Ultrabay power connector to the right.

Yes, Ray and tfflivemb2 are quite right in suggesting that it might be fuses, or some other problem. Typically the inductors at the bottom of the motherboard drop off but the one in Ray's image (the large black rounded-square thing) has also been known to separate. If it does then it will act as "blown fuse" so check it's contact with the motherboard.
