T23 CD drive ejecting on boot up if empty

#1 Post by schleptop » Wed Dec 06, 2006 11:15 pm

On my T23, the CD drive ejects the tray on boot up if it's empty. (IIRC, in the boot device order the CD drive comes before the hard disk.) Is this what it's meant to do? Is there something I can do to stop this happening?

That's weird! Any other symptoms. Can you close the drive after's it's ejected - does it remain closed? If it closes, does it eject a CD if you try to read from it?

If it's hardware-related, I would try reseating the drive, check the pins at both ends. If all else fails, reseat connector at motherboard.
Cheers

If the CDROM drawer ejects on power-up and refuses to remain inside when pushed back in (with power still on), then I would assume you could have a stuck or shorted-out eject button. Changing the boot order will not make the problem go away; fixing the button or replacing the drive would be my suggestions. I have verified this with a T23 DVD drive and a taped-down eject button.

Is it possible to boot a T21 from an external CD drive? And install windows that way?

From either a USB or PCMCIA external drive? I'm not sure, I don't have an external USB drive and the PCMCIA CDROM I have is currently missing a power supply (on order from eBay). From looking at the T21 BIOS Startup/Boot menu, there does not appear to be a way of specifying USB or PCMCIA. Can anybody else answer this?

I vaguely remember (though not 100% sure) that my X20's could boot from USB CD drives, so the T21 (more recent and more powerful than the X20) most likely can do it too.

The tray will stay in once pushed in, and I've successfully installed WinXP using the drive, so the only problem is this annoying behaviour. I've noticed that the same thing happens when the T23 is shutting down, so it seems to happen when power is applied or switched off.

Well, I'd like to get a DVD drive in there eventually anyway, so it's not too serious.
