I guess I'm not alone.

I originally submitted the form on December 7th (the day I got the computer). I mailed it in through the postal service because I didn't realize that it could be emailed. From day one it said "order confirmed" (or something like that) under the order status. On Friday (Jan 19th) the order status changed to "COA validated" so I sent them an email asking if they got everything because I hadn't received any confirmation and I asked why the status changed. They said that they haven't received my POP yet (after over a month, and I live in the same state as they do?) Anyways, I emailed my POP to them and I got the email saying they received it but nothing else yet.
Dear Customer,

Thank you for submitting your order to upgrade your MicrosoftR Product.

We have received a copy of your proof of purchase. We will email you a confirmation when the validation process is complete.

Hi all,
I got an email recently from Moduslink. It would seem they have not been able to process either of my emails but did provide more explicit details on what should be on the email back to them.
  • 1. you must use the respective regional contact email listed in the confirmation email with your confirmation number.
    2. the emails subject must read "Upgrade Redemption Center POP"
    3. provide them with:
    • a. proof of purchase
      b. order confirmation number (repeated from #1)
      c. scanned copy of confirmation page
      d. scanned copy of receipt
Comments on the items to provide...
(a) "proof of purchase"
I assumed this was the 14 digit number on the Genuine Windows sticker. It is actually any form of receipt for the computer in question. They accept a scanned image file or PDF.
(c) "scanned copy of confirmation page"
I assumed this is for Thinkpad purchase. It is apparently one of the accepted proof-of-purchase.
(d) "scanned copy of receipt"
Again, just another accepted proof-of-purchase.
I don't have one. I'm sending my confirmation email instead.

Wish me luck. I'll update as it comes.

This Modus upgrade process is a nightmare...
I faxed AND e-mailed mine.

I would recommend doing both as well.

Has anyone actually received their DVD yet?

From what I've heard -- Vista update does invalidate the XP key but a workaround for a clean Vista install using the update disk may be possible. See:

I don't believe this to be true in the case of upgrades to OEM Windows installs. The key used in the preload and on the Recovery Disk is a generic Lenovo key that also uses a BIOS check to activate the computer. It may deactivate the XP key if you previously had a retail or other copy that uses a unique key, but I haven't heard anything about that either.

Do I understand your statement correctly if I say that the ServiceV001 partition should be preserved with Vista clean install?

BIOS still needs it to check the Lenovo key. doesn't it?

Let me address your BIOS question first. The BIOS doesn't verify anything on the Service partition, but it does have a setting to prevent the user from removing it. The BIOS check I spoke of is performed by Windows. The license key used by Lenovo to install Windows is generic and just tells the operating system that it needs to check the BIOS for a specific string to verify that the installation is valid. This does not depend at all on the Service partition.

The Service partition is merely there in order to recover and restore your computer. You don't need this to operate the computer normally. I did a clean install of Windows using a custom Windows CD I put together and therefore I had no use for it, but if you are using the default Lenovo, it would be very useful if you have problems in the future.

You don't need the service partition for installing Windows Vista (even an upgrade), but I believe the partition will survive the Windows Vista installation. After the Vista installation, the partition will probably not be accessible without running a fix utility from Lenovo (although I don't know for sure).

No matter what you do with the Service partition, please burn the recovery dvd's using the including Lenovo software. The burn will require one CD and one DVD (in that order), but the utility won't tell you that. I wasted a DVD to burn a CDs worth of information!

If this just confused you more, please let me know and I'll try to clarify.

My Vista order appears to be confirmed now but no word on when it will be on its way... oh well, I'm not in a rush. They haven't actually zapped my charge card for the $30.56 yet, either. I guess they'll do that when they ship.

ModusLink is a pretty useless company it seems. I put in two of the free upgrades, one for my Lenovo and another for a family HP. Within a day or two i also submitted the proof of purchase and got the generated reply saying that it would be validated soon. That was back in very late December, probably around the 29th, and currently my Lenovo order says only COA Validated with no mention of shipping, but my HP order says Awaiting order shipment with a shipping date of "March 2007." The amount of information and help they provide is pretty minimal these days and it really sucks. Luckily I'm not really depending on this upgrade, but it's more the principle of the thing!

Moduslink blew it on the taxes

#41 Post by Ianski » Fri Feb 16, 2007 11:15 pm

I got an e-mail from Moduslink today. It says:

Dear Valued Microsoft Windows Vista Customers:
The website on which you placed an order for an upgrade to Windows Vista for your Microsoft Product experienced a technical problem whereby your estimated tax due was overstated. Your credit card has not been charged. The corrected amount, plus any applicable local taxes, will be charged to your credit card when ModusLink ships Microsoft Windows Vista to you.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact the fulfillment center directly at MSTUPVISTANA@ModusLink.com.

We apologize for any potential confusion and look forward to fulfilling your order.

Sincerely yours,
The Upgrade Redemption Center

after reading their e-mail, I re-checked the status of my order:

Well, it's good to hear that ModusLink is actually doing something these days. It's been over a week since I e-mailed them and I have yet to hear anything from them. I sent my POP in at the end of December and it still doesn't say POP validated... Very annoying...

I don't know, if you guys have noticed this at end of the first confirmation e-mail you all received:

"The Upgrade Software will ship within approximately 4-6 weeks after the later of the date you completed the redemption order requirements or the availability date of the Upgrade Software in your requested language version in your country."

6 weeks from the availibity of Vista translates to mid March, so if all goes well, we should probably have our Vistas by 21st of March (if delivery takes 1 week). Have patience, just let'em fix the bugs in the mean time.

I'm not sure about other people, but I do understand the waiting time for getting the actual product and I'm not complaining about that. What I'm complaining about is that I sent in my POP almost two months ago now and I have yet to see any activity. I sent an e-mail to them almost two weeks ago to find out why and I still haven't gotten a single response back. As of now my status is on "COA Validated" and going nowhere fast. Other orders including another of mine for a HP notebook are "Awaiting shipment." If mine were at that phase I wouldn't be complaining, but considering that I submitted both upgrades and POPs on the same day, I would expect them both to be on the same step by now (The HP order has been Awaiting shipment for over two weeks now, so the change didn't just happen either)!

Well, it looks like my Proof of Purchase was finally validated...

This "Free Upgrade" is a pain in my [censored].
I've gotten about 4 e-mails from MODUS stating that my attached POP could not be opened. It seems that they do not (or will not) accept Adobe PDF files. I sent my POP in as a JPG and it finally went through.

I don't think I'll ever get my upgrade...

It's funny that you mention PDF since I filled out two redemptions on the same day, one for Lenovo and one for HP. A few days later I made a PDF of the online invoices for each and sent them each to ModusLink in seperate e-mails referencing the correct Order numbers. I got the received notification soon after and by the end of January, the HP order is waiting for shipment, but the the Lenovo one is still stuck on COA validated. I sent an e-mail two weeks ago and have yet to get a response, so I'm thinking of just sending my POP again. What exactly did you send to them? I used the online order invoice, but maybe they didn't accept that and never replied to me?

Moduslink has the worst Customer Service I've ever seen.

Order was placed on 29/Dec/2006 (for Europe).

Until 4/Feb/2007 status changed back and forth regarding the vadidation of the receipt and the validation of the COA.

On 4/Feb/2007 I e-mailed them asking about the status of the order.

On 9/Feb/2007 I got an automated reply:
Dear customer,
This is in response to your email regarding the Vista upgrade program.
Due to an overwhelming interest in the Upgrade Redemption Program we unfortunately have not been able to reply to your query in a more timely manner.

With this message we want to acknowledge the receipt of your email. We will provide you with an answer to your query in the near future  . In the meantime, we thank you for your patience.

Our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused by this delay.
Regards,
The Upgrade Redemption Support Centre
Today that I checked, it shows Order Status: Shipped, Shipping date: blank.

I just hope that it really has shipped and it's not just their stupid system (since it doesn't include the shipping date).

They have still not answered my e-mail.

Moduslink sucks almost as much as Microsoft

#51 Post by Ken Fox » Fri Feb 23, 2007 12:35 am

I've been going round and round with these bozos for a month. I've submitted 3 upgrade requests and they claim none of them are in their system even though I have response emails.

Now the system will not accept my COA numbers as I've attempted to re-enter the orders.

Finally I sent them an email and told them my next step was a formal complaint with the attorney general's office in my state plus complaints to lenovo. They sent me an 800 number to call and chat with them about this.

I actually have no personal interest in using Vista, just I want the disks for resale purposes with the laptops when the time comes to unload them.

I had it with moduslink, they have cancelled my order with no apparent reason. Everytime I asked them about its status they always replied saying they never received my POP (Proof of Purchase) which by the way I sent them 3 times which they even admitted of receiving before.

There is at least one intelligent person @ Moduslink

#53 Post by Ken Fox » Fri Feb 23, 2007 7:30 pm

I called Moduslink this afternoon after more than a month's worth of run arounds; I'm trying to get upgrade disks for 3 new Thinkpads which will probably never be installed by me but kept around for the eventuality when I resell them, to be able to sell them with Vista which might help a few years from now. And we are entitled to these upgrades as that is what was told to us when we bought these laptops recently.

After pushing a few buttons and waiting several minutes, a person sounding not very bright answered the phone. When I told him I was calling about THREE upgrades he appeared to feel in over his head and transferred me to a lady with an obviously greater competency level. I told her about my orders that appeared to have disappeared into the ether and that could not be found when I sent in the POPs. She asked me for the COAs and as it turned out the orders were still all in the system but had not been matched up with the POPs I'd sent.

I asked her why, if she could find the orders, that I kept getting back emails from people who couldn't find them. She implied that they were either incompetent, new hires, or stupid (my vote would be, all three of the above).

Anyway, this is what she suggested: Do not send any emails that reference more than one order; if you have multiple orders, send separate emails, one for each order. In the email, reference your order number, and ALSO put in the COA of the machine in question. This will give the person two ways to look up the order. And, she said that PDF file scan attachments of POPs were actually preferred over other file formats.

She said that the disks are going out now and that once the POP is received by them the disk should ship within 24 to 48 hours. Sending the POP in by letter mail is likely to make for a 2 week delay, so emailed POPs are preferred.

Whether any of this information will actually help anyone I do not know. I'm still waiting for my first disk to ship.

Well, I'm getting more frustrated. After sending me an email saying that they've received my POP and will be validating it, I just got another email saying that I have to send in my POP.

I just sent it in once again once again with everything, COA, Order Number and Pop. I guess I might have to call these guys up to, it almost seems hopeless.

Windows Vista Express Upgrade could begin shipping next week

#58 Post by romeogg » Sat Feb 24, 2007 8:18 pm

Came across the following article today.

Chicago (IL) - If you purchased a PC before January 30 and took advantage of the Vista Express Upgrade program, you know by now that this program is everything else but "Express". In fact, three of the five largest PC vendors in the U.S. have confirmed to TG Daily that - almost four weeks after the launch of the OS - no Vista Express Upgrades have shipped to their customers yet.

The Vista Express upgrade program appears to be causing headaches in all links that are involved in the supply chain - Microsoft's chosen upgrade provider ModusLink, PC vendors and consumers. Ken Walker, as senior director responsible for the Vista rollout at Gateway, told TG daily in a conversation today that "probably no Vista Express Upgrades have been delivered to PC buyers yet." This assumption was confirmed to TG Daily by two other large U.S. PC vendors.

The Vista Express Upgrade program was put in place by Microsoft to make the new operating system part of the Christmas buying season, while the actual software was not released until January 30 of this year. Most new PCs purchased during the holiday season qualified for this "Express Upgrade," which promised consumers - depending on the PC manufacturer - a convenient and free (or fairly cheap) upgrade to the new operating system.

Microsoft determined the rules of the upgrade, with the idea to outsource every step of the upgrade process to the PC vendor and the infrastructure provider ModusLink, which handles the sign-up and shipping of Vista Express Upgrades worldwide. In order to get the upgrade, PC buyers who qualify for the upgrade need to sign up online in what often has been described as a complicated and tiring process that could take more than 30 minutes to complete.

Recently, we have been getting emails from readers who told us that they have not yet received their Vista upgrade. It is quite apparent that users are getting increasingly frustrated in a situation where they expected to have a product on their doorstep on January 30 and it still has not arrived. The first assumption, of course, is that there is a hiccup or a delay in the supply chain, which, however, is not the case.

In fact, we were told by Walker that the Express Upgrade sign-up form states in the fine print that users should expect to see their Vista upgrade in the mail about eight to ten eights after retail availability of Vista. According to Walker, a substantial number of users have not noticed this fine print and begin shelling Gateway with questions about this issue - which, in the end, cannot be resolved by the PC vendor alone.

Here's why: When the Express Upgrade finally reaches the customer, it typically will consist of a regular Windows Vista copy as well as a companion CD that contains certain upgrades that need to go along with Vista on a specific PC. Walker told us that the Gateway companion CD will ensure core functionality of a system as well as Internet connectivity, which will allow consumers to download driver updates for their computer. For example, these CDs will include BIOS updates especially for lower end systems with 512 MB main memory and shared memory graphics cards (to limit the graphics memory to 64 MB and allow Vista to actually boot.)

If you sent in your POP and didn't have it rejected yet, then I'm sure everything is "fine," at least by moduslink standards. I called them last week and they said that they are really backed up and that my POP should be processed soon (I sent it in over two months ago and I told the guy that), but I'm not holding my breath. I'm betting it will be April or longer before I see any upgrade CDs...
