770E + scanner

Using the Epson CD I installed my (known good) Epson 2400 scanner on my 770E with Win98SE.

Every time I try to do something with it it tells me I should install TWAIN.

Epson TWAIN is the very first thing the install wizard installs and I've uninstalled (or not) and repeated it several times.

Is this a case of windows scrapping non-microsoft drivers and substituting its own non-working drivers?
