Disable IBM Message Center

#1 Post by MarcosV » Sat Sep 04, 2004 7:58 pm

Hi All,

I have a Thinkpad R40 running XP Pro.. Upon boot up I get an icon in my task tray called 'IBM Message Center'

I don't see much use for this since I haven't gotten a message in it the entire 9 months I've owned the laptop.

Does anyone know how I can disable this utility? I've looked everywhere and can't see where to kill it.

Thanks

Jim

It's started at boot time by an entry in the registry. On my machine, there are three different entries:

...\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

...\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

...\HKEY_USERS\<my-user-key>\Software\... (same as other two)

The field name on the right side of the regedit display is "ibmmessages"

I don't know if you have to remove all of them to get it to stop.

Standard disclaimer: IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING IN THE REGISTRY, DON'T MESS WITH IT. YOU CAN EASILY TURN YOUR MACHINE INTO A PAPERWEIGHT.

That said, I've only had my machine for about a week and have already received several messages, a couple of which I found useful.

Or you can just simply uninstall it. It's downloadable from IBM if you happen to change your mind.

Duh...

Far to easy and direct.

Certainly nothing I'd ever think of.

 Or run msconfig and uncheck the IBM Message Center's box. I know, it's still too simple.
