X23 recovery cd?
X23 recovery cd?
My TP X23 seems to have caught a virus today. When I try to boot it up, it gives me a blue screen with the message,
"*** STOP: 0x80976030, 0xc0000032, 0x000000000,0x000000000
INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop Error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
Refer to your Getting Started manual for more information on troubleshooting Stop erros"
I don't have a recovery CD for Windows 2000 Professional. If anyone could send me a copy, I'd be glad to pay for it.
Anyone have any advise for me?
TIA,
Dave Hamilton

Could be a virus, but that would not necessarily be my first suspicion. More likely your hard drive is failing. Maybe after several tries it will boot up. If possible, run a hard drive diagnostics test. Here are a couple:

Re: X23 recovery cd?
(I didn't notice the STOP error had a misspelling until after I checked google. Bad job, Microsoft).
After reading this

I think it is a CD-driver problem...in other words, you pop the CD, it starts installing, but after first restart where it will continue reading off the CD, it stops...
there are some solutions if this indeed is the case.

I downloaded and make Windows 2000 Pro boot disks. When I use them to try to boot my X23, I get the message,
"STOP: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error
\SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll"
It ten tells me to remove any new hardware - of which there is none.
It tells to to try to start in Safe mode. When I try that I get the :STOP: Inaccessible Boot.." message.
Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this problem with out a Windows 2000 CD?

Assuming you have an optical drive (CD drive), try removing the hard drive then booting from a Windows install CD. If you can boot the CD fine, then the hard drive is likely the problem. If you have any other bootable CD's, try and boot up one of them. If you ever made a Rescue Media CD, boot that up. IIRC, Norton antivirus CD is bootable. If you have no bootable CD's, try and borrow one from a friend.
If you do not have an optical drive but have a floppy drive you can boot from, try booting a floppy. Here is PC Doctor for DOS, which is on floppies that are bootable. It will also run diagnostics on your system. PC Doctor diagnostic - ThinkPad X20, X21, X22, X23, X24
If there is no change after removing the hard drive, then reverse the procedure. Put the hard drive back in and remove any other drives in the system - optical or floppy, then try to boot up from the hard drive.
FWIW, I still think your hard drive may be the culprit - but there are other possibilities.
Let us know what happens.

GomJabber,
I downloaded the PC Doctor disks and booted the X23 with them. I ran the daignostics, and the hard drive checks out fine. I don't have a bootable CD, but there is no difference in the error messages when docked in the media slice or not.
I am now trying to find a Windows 2000 Pro installation disk. I understand that I can do a "repair" installation that will not hinder my data.
I'll let you know when I get it going.
