R51 - Location of air intake vents?

#1 Post by kirtan_a » Fri Dec 08, 2006 3:28 am

Hi all,

I'm planning to build a DIY cooling fan system for my R51. For that I wanted to know the exact location of the air intake vents.

Also I want to know whether it is better to suck out air from the exhaust or to blow in air?

Thanks in advance.

I was wondering about the same thing a few months back. I did notice this, occasionally, I open up my machine to dust it off and I noticed that dirt builds up of the top of the battery, the same is also true on the sides of the keyboard so I suspect they could both be intakes. Not to mention the openings on the bottom of the shell.

Bottom of your palm rest. See the whole line of small holes? That\'s the air vent intake. Place your hand there when you turn on your thinkpad and you can feel cool air from that area.

How to add another fan into the thinkpad when it is so crammed inside? :?

Nothing inside...

I'm not planning to add any fan inside! I'm just planning to build an incline on which I'll put the laptop. This will serve the dual purpose of an ergonomic position and some extra cooling from the bottom.

I assume you're talking about the holes on the left side near the headphone jacks. If air is coming out of them, they probably are the exhaust vents.

Maybe this will help. I search many places but couldn't find any conclusive answer on the location of the intake vents.. So right now I'm just planning to build a model which will blow air under where the CPU lies. i.e. under the place where the exhaust is.

No, not the air vent.

The air intake vent is at the palm rest (below). You know the thinkpad 2 plastic latch to click and lock your notebook LCD cover. Below the latch holes and the IBM logo and that stickers (win XP) below the black cover. (got so many small holes, & you tell me you never notice that) :D

Sorry, i do not know how to explain properly but i hoped you get the idea what i am referring to.

well well! I had no idea those were for intake! If it is so, then I'm afraid I won't be able to do anything there. The only thing as I said would be to blow some air under the CPU. This isn't documented all that well anywhere on the net.

Thanks for the info. Smile

Initially, i thought those holes are for the speaker but nope... until i opened up the thinkpad.

There you go: :-)
