X23 Maximum Capacity

#1 Post by SteveBurton » Fri Dec 08, 2006 6:54 pm

Hi All

I love my X23 as it has served me very well over the years. Really need more memory and HD capacity and don't want to buy a new machine to get that.
Have searched the forum for an answer to this but am still confused!
My question is ..............
What is the maximum RAM my X23 can cope with and What is the maximum Hard Drive it can cope with?

Thanks

You have 128 MB of hardwired memory and one slot that'll take up to a 512 MB module, so your memory maxes out at 640 MB (not so bad).

I don't know of any hard limits on disk size, and I have read of people successfully using at least 7200 rpm 60 GB disks in X23s.

Thanks for your quick reply.

Have 256mb RAM at the moment, presume this is the 128m hardwired plus a 128mb stick?. Was thinking of doubling the hard drive from the current 30gb to 60 if I can afford it.

During my search of the forum posts there was some reference to the BIOS requiring an update in some cases.
Would I need to do this as well?

Yes, you would need to replace the 128 MB module. 512 MB available on eBay:

Moderate-sized drives can be found inexpensively. For example:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=33815
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=30638

To get both, you'll probably spend $150-200 depending on which ones you choose, but if you get a 512 MB module and a 7200 rpm drive, your X23 will fly. :)

To be safe, yes, I would start with the BIOS upgrade.

Again, thanks for the swift reply....

Now to find a competent person to do the BIOS for me, and spend some money!

I think the BIOS is pretty straight-forward as long as you follow the instructions.

Now, if you need a competent person to spend your money, I might be able to help!

Tom
Just been checking the ibm/lenovo website re the BIOS.
Is just a question of installing the last listed BIOS update to enable me to do what I need to do with the memory and hard drive.
Although I can find my way round a computer I get fazed when it gets too technical!
